fuel level gauge qustion

I have a 93 toyota sr5 model truck 4x4 and I am putting new gauges in and I was wondering if I splce the wire that is on top of the fuel tank that works with the float in the tank that tells the factory gauge what to read. if I can use this as my sender wire for my after market gauge to work? I have a Haynes Repair manual based on a complete teardown and rebuild and it shows very little in the back under the wiring diagram as to what color wires i need to splice to make my after market gauge work it shows me that my fuel gauge runs via a 6/12 Y-R 3 to the fuel sender and the it says 1 BR that goes to a line at the bottom that has a period on the line marked with the letter G is this the line I need to splice into or is there another line I need to go to any help woruld me apprecieated

The Yellow-Red wire from your sender is the signal wire for the gauge.

If it will work on the aftermarket gauge will be a trial-and-error discovery on your part. Does the documentation for the new gauge happen to mention its range of resistance for it's reading? If so then you could compare it to your sender by using an Ohms meter while moving the float.

As for the wiring on your aftermarket gauge, could you describe its wiring in a bit less confusing manner? It should have three wires (or poles): 1 +12v, 1 -12v, and 1 Signal.

on the back of my gauge it has three poles one is fitted with a + the other has a - and then the third has the letter "S" I have figured out that the S goes to the sender but I cant figure out what wire on the truck is the sender wire

Ok, you are correct, the pole labeled "S" needs an input from the fuel sending unit. And the factory wire that runs from the fuel sending unit to the back of the instrument cluster is about an 18-gauge wire that is Yellow with a single Red stripe.

so your saying that i can tie into the old wire in the dash that is yellow and red and this will be my sending wire from my fuel tank ?
