big tires and stock birfs.
« on: May 19, 2007, 01:02:58 PM »
i'm looking at getting some 37" irocks for the runner. just wondering if the stock birfs will be able to hold up or will i be changing them on every run i go on. i dont mind breaking one every now and then but i dont want to be doing it every day. how many of you are running 35"+ tires on stock birfs?

So far my 35" TXR's and stock birfs have been doing good. I dunno if i'd go much bigger then 36's though.
Starting from scratch again...

Are you locked up front? If not it shouldnt be too big of a problem. I have a buddy that ran stock birfs with 37x12.5s and an open front diff for two years, never broke a birfield.  He wheeled it pretty hard too. I think going past 37s is going to start pushing it, especially if you end up getting a locker, then it will definitely fail eventually. My friend swapped his birfs out for marlins birf-eliminator kit because he is getting an ARB, but that is the only reason why.

I would say keep em and just remember that you have stock birfs. Dont bash your front around or bind your tires up and floor it all the time and you should be fine. If you do get a front locker then you will probably want to upgrade to Longfields or Marfields because then you will start breaking birfs more often.

Yeah it all depends on how you drive really. If you are conservative the birfs will hold up fine. If you like to hammer down...well then they might not do so hot :P

thanks guys. i was a little bit skeptical on the situation. i was even going to look for smaller tires.i do drive the rig pretty hard so i guess i have to let off a little and I'll be sure to bring extra birfs when i go wheeling. hopefully i can get them tomorrow along with some 15x10" rims.

I got 35s on both of my trucks.
My buddy has 37s on his truck.

All stock birfs.  As long as you're not locked in the front, you should be alright.

Correct, they measure out 36.8" off the wheel, 36" on the ground.
According to interco the 37" IROK's measure 36.5"  :dunno: wierd.
i thought mini had longs? no?
Nope, running 22 year old birfs. Carry some 24 year old birfs for spares. :yesnod:

And yeah, Aussie in the front/rear.

I am running 37" tires with  true trac up front and I have broke both sides. I went to Longfields and I have never had a problem since. On the otherhand my buddy has 38" boggers and a small block in his yota with stock birfs and has never broke one. I think it all depends on when they want to break!!!

I think that's a good point. You're rig may be setup so that the odds are stacked against you, but there is a bit of luck that decides when a birf is gonna go.

3 runs on the 'con and numerous other trips and I finally broke a right side "poo-field" in front of my shop showin' off. Tires turned in reverse= BOOM. I'd upgrade as soon as possible. Especially with 37's and a locker.
I'm runnin' 35's and a lock rite and I drive like a pansy.

I've been running 37s on stock birfs for about a year and a half.  I have an ARB in the front and try not to beat on it too bad when it's locked. I'd recommend carrying a spare and start saving for some longs if you plan on wheelin it hard.

if your not going to be driving on the street much i would get iroks. the rubber is a lot softer then the tsl/s and they kick ass in just about everything. i dont really have any complaints about my tsl's though, i just liked my iroks better.
