Brakes
« on: May 13, 2007, 01:18:41 PM »
Does anyone make the rotors for the 79 solid axle anymore?  and if not, will the newer style rotors 85 or FJ fit on the 79 axle...and if not...what can I do about working on the brakes on a 79 (the rotors are really chewed and I need pads BAD!)

you think there is any way for me to be able to add on the vented style rotor instead of the solid?

if i remeber correct all you need to do is get later model hubs so you can bolt up fj rotors with ifs calipers or standard solid rotors. if you want to save some money and still get better brakes go with cross drilled and slotted rotors from lc engineering. i have them on my rig with 37's and they stop on a dime and the get less heat fade than my buddies truck with the fj vented setup.

That's what I thought you were going for too.  I've been wanting to do the same with my 80 also, don't want to go through all the bs.  Seems like there was a vintage of landcruiser rotors that would work :headscratch:

Yeah, I am just curious if the later style knuckles and spindles (everything that was changed through the years) will still bolt up to the 79 housing so that I can just put on the vented style rotor with IFS calipers.

Oh, I thought you were wondering if you could get vented rotors to fit without mods.  That's what I'm shooting for anyway.

looks like they will fit as long as you get the later style knuckles and everything.  Nice to know that the housing is still the same...and since I am going to rebuild my axle anyway, might as well swap over newer year model knuckles.

I put FJ rotors on my 83, and 90 V-6 calipers. just had to grind a little tiny bit off the dust garde on the back. that was all.
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:

Right, but what I'm trying to do is update to the rotors without switching out anything but rotors and calipers.  I just don't want to have to go and buy the different knuckles.

you dont need different knuckles they are all same just the hubs are different where the rotors bolt on. you machine them but it is to much work.

I see.  I have 86 hubs, might have to look a little more seriously into the sky kit, just don't really want to spend the cash.

no you dont need to use ifs hubs just 82 to 85 solid axle hubs 79-81 had a different system for bolting up the brake rotors.
