An 87 is a TALL block, not a short block.

yup Tall block, provided that the donor trucks motor was not swapped around by the previous owner.

Just to be sure i would look for the lazer etching.  :yesnod:

I got that here

Sorry rednk1980,

I think i had it backwards and spoke to soon after rereading the tech sites.

The early model blocks (81-84). Tall Block. With a Deck height of 9.120"  11.280

The later blocks (85-95). Short Block. With a Deck height of 8.950" 11.090 and they do have the lazer etching on the side of the block.

When I bought my last engine out of a junk yard, that was one of the things i used to make sure it was an early block.

I think i have it right now.  please double check me

Anyone have a short block timing cover? I need one mine cracked right were the bolt from the head goes into the cover.

A local to me shop gets brand new covers for less than $40, whis is one heck of a deal in my opinion. I probably have a used one lying around here somewhere. If you could get me the exact hieght of the front cover I will check. I could even give that shop a call.
