Sad Day on Bald 5-6-07
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:01:53 PM »
We had a great day of wheeling. But when we got to the top this is what we found. It was done today because it was not there yesterday. We found who we think did it & turned their info in to L.E.

Does anybody know what C.O.B stands for.

It's been 10+ years since I've been to the lookout. That place looks trashed.

I'm wondering if it's a Band, or  club. Or even the initials of a business.

Well, there is Children Of Bodom, but unless a Swedish Death Metal band recently got into 4wheeling, it ain't them. :ha_ha:

No help with COB. :sad2: Our local tower at Morton Peak (SoCal) looked like that a few years ago but has since been restored and can be rented out. Maybe you guys could turn the negative into a project. After the trouble up there last summer (not naming names) the 4X4 community could use some good publicity.  :)

I think it's a good idea, me an a buddy of mine were thinking of taking some ply board up there to put on the floor and cover up the holes so we could camp in it . I don't know what the rangers would think, but it'd be nice to clean it up  :dunno:

It looks like a some white trash writing since gang bangers tend to not like the mountains.   COB probably means Crazy Old Bastards since the numbers 5150 are above it.

Great ideas. :yesnod: I came across this article that mentions Kathy Ball who is the director of the Central California and Nevada chapter of the Forest Fire Fighter Lookout Association. It appears that she assisted with the resoration of the tower at Buck Rock. You may want to contact her for further info and efforts to restore the lookout at Bald Mtn. :)

Here is another link: http://www.buckrock.org/

Now on one of the sites there is this picture of a tower at Bald Mtn.

I take there are several towers there. :dunno:

Started doing a little reasearch and found this
Quote
SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST
1. Bald Mountain - Abandoned and vandalized. No plan for rehab
....

here's the link: http://www.firelookout.org/cr-centcalifornia06.htm

I'm going to try to contact Kathryn Ball and see if they would allow someone to clean it up that's not associated with the forst service, like some local wheelers

couldn't hurt  :dunno:

Now just for clarification for people like me  :slap: we are talking about two different "Bald" mountains. From your link:
Quote
SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST
...
2. Bald Mt - Staffed 7 days with 2 GS employees. Kern River RD
...
SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST
1. Bald Mountain - Abandoned and vandalized. No plan for rehab

One is in the Sierra and one in Sequoia. :hammerhead: I was only aware of a Bald Mtn near Shaver Lake.  8)

I'd like to help out rebuilding the thing.  I'll drag all the tools up the mountain.  I'll bring drinks and my wife will cook up some grub for everyone.  I'll be watching for updates on this.

i wonder if it is still safe? i mean it looks liek its in decent condition, but you never know if it was subjected to fire or if the elements have taken a toll on the integrity of the wood....

I'm sure it's taken it's toll on the wood, the floor has a couple holes in it, as well as the roof, but the main structure is steal. Including I beams running across the wood floor undernieth IIRC. Me and a few buddies slept up there one night  :shhh:, camping was full and that's where we happened to stop for the day, made sure it was safe first ofcourse

it looks liek there is some fire damage to it, anyway to prove that? steel loses 50% of its strength at a very low temperatire

I really can't say for sure  :dunno:

It seems to have all the wood, just weathered and some holes, along with missing the glass. So I wouldn't think it has been burned. The black on the structure could be from a fire next to it, there's a black fire "pit" type spot next to it last time I was up last summer  :dunno:

I haven't been to the tower itself, but from pics, IIRC, the tower is actually away from any vegatation, out on the granite.  :dunno:  Most watch towers are usually built away from the vegatation for exactly this reason (and for visibiltiy purposes)

Yeah, there isn't much around it, not nearly as much (if any) as other lookouts i've seen. Here's some pics from last summer, both taken from on the tower

here's the closest vegitation

And the view of shaver

If this is approved.

I know that there is quite a bit of interest in doing a Clean-Up the Tower day or weekend from one of the clubs I'm in called 4x4Him Christian Wheelers. Could turn out to be a neat event.

Question: (again from the guy who towed his boat 6 hours to Shaver and hasn't wheeled there yet:disturbed: How would you rate the trail to the tower (easy, moderate difficult)? How far in miles and time is the tower from a paved road?  The reason I ask is it is likely you will receive more support from outside donations and the likelihood of it being staffed by volunteers on the weekends if there is easy (or somewhat easy) access to the tower. :twocents:

If you hear anything from Kathy Ball, the thread should be renamed and placed on top as a sticky event.  :yesnod: I might just drive up to pitch in.  :_order:
