Lexan Windshield for Toyota?
« on: May 05, 2007, 09:42:16 PM »
So I posted this over at PBB as well.. but I figured there's alot of great minds over here that dont get on PBB much so why not post in both locations?

Does it exist?

Any company make Lexan windshields specifically for Toyota's or is it an item that you have to special order from someone?

Upon doing some research i've found...

This one doesn't say anything about Toyota, just a few misc cars.

http://www.percyshp.com/index.php?op...=3&Itemid =33

Explains speedglass but doesn't mention if pre formed windshields are made

http://www.offroadoverstock.com/stor...&cat=20&afid=&

Any input? I'm getting tired of shattering my windshield everytime my truck flops/rolls

Just make your own out of a piece of lexan, of course you will need a windshield for a pattern. Then with a propane torch just heat and bend to shape.

I dont feel confident enough to go buy an expensive piece of Lexan and try to mold it.. LOL... i'd probably burn or bubble it some how.. I dont know enough about it to feel comfortable molding.

Just don't roll/flop! LOL

Seriously, if you're doing it that often, just need to take the windshield out. Any Lexan/polycarbonate windshield is gonna get scratched so fast in offroad use that you won't be able to see out of it anyways.

If you're doing it to be "legal" on the way to/from the trail, note that plexi windshields are illegal for road use in most states anyways. SOME states will allow you to drive a vehicle without a windshield if you have goggles.

Refer to the sig, this rig will never see street use.

according to speedglass it has almost all the same traits as glass... within .3% of glass and will not scratch.

I know guys in buggies run them without any complaints.

Yea true Lexan is scratch resistant, shatter resistant and almost bullet proof. It is expensive, expect to pay more for a sheet of it than the cost of a new windshield. But it's probably worth it if you keep bustin them.

It HAS to be able to flex because thats the only reason why my window is breaking.. the cab tweaks when it's layed over and this is what's causing the shatter.

Besides that... glass in the eye probably doesn't feel very well!

So if it's trail only, why worry about a windshield at all? :headscratch:

  A. Dust sucks
  B. Its nice to have if it starts raining, or Snowing
  C. Keeps the heat in when snow wheeling

Exactly, It's nice to be able to do snow runs and keep the heat in (somewhat)

And I have bad allergies so dust kills me on the trail... if it can be blocked by a windshield it helps alot.

Brad I got an e-mail from a guy that has pre formed speedglass for our trucks.

Here's his e-mail

sales@roadlessgear.com

looking at around $220 shipped to your door.

these seem like a great idea but a lot of money, i know it is about the same price as a new windshield anyways, but still pretty expensive.  i want to cut a piece of lexan to fit and then heat it up and mold it around stock winshield to get the right curve to it, might work and it would be cheaper
