newfie toy
« on: Apr 30, 2007, 05:43:08 PM »
hello, my name is todd. i live in st. johns, newfoundland. i have a 1990 4runner which i have owned for about 4 years now. i put this truck through hell and the ifs took it very well, but we all know how quickly we get sick of that no flex. so yesterday i couldn't take it any longer.
ifs in

ifs out

hanger tacked

hole in frame

tube installed

shackles i made

got the leafs hung and had to call it a day at this point because i had to go to work.

not bad for 4 1/2 hours and the first time i used a torch.

i made some spring pearches and shackle hangers for the rear. now all i gotta do is cut all that coil crap off and swap in the leafs.
i made the pearches out of 2x3" square tube, though i dont think they will be wide enough so i'll probally weld a piece or 1/4" flat bar to the side of them.

shackle hanger. made out of 2x2" square tube and an old round pipe i had kicking around. turned out better than i thought.

I'm scared to take my 82 to the Rock if I move back.

Look good man.
I'd run a brace from the frame to the front spring hanger though.

I would upgrade to a thicker plate for the front u bolt flip, those look a little thin. I also noticed a stock steering arm , are you gonna buy hysteer? I built the majority of my own stuff too, when puting my truck together, so I know where you are coming from. Props to you for going the extra mile! :clap2:

the front flip plate was just a temp, i picked up some 3/8 the week so i'll make some new ones.
seeing how my steering didnt come yet :snare:i started on the rear. anyone ever try to turn a truck around with no steering? :hammer:. it wasnt as easy as i thought, trying to find the right placement and what not. anyway this is it.

chassis rot

anyone ever use ranger leafs in the rear? i didnt get much lift, even with a 7" shackle so i may have to run blocks till ii get new springs.

also whats the biggest tire i can run without breaking to much? i want a 37" but i'm kinda thinking its a bit much for the stock birfs. i will eventually upgrade and get some 529's as well.

what is that between the perch and the spring? why lifted perches? are you trying to match the front lift?

i would make some ramps for the front of the rear spring hangars so they dont drag on the rocks

thats a factory lift block for a ranger. yes i had to put them in to match the front lift. if i do keep them i will cut that thing off the side. i'm going to add a leaf or two to the pack so they dont settle so much(they are realy soft), then maybe i wont have to run a block. i also think i will have to add some more strength to that pearch.

leaf hits rod

still have to install shocks and break lines and clean up the frame and do body work/paint, remove body lift, get rims and tires and make front and maybe rear shaft. i'm sure thats not all.
what do you all think?

blacing on the front hanger and moved my steering box forward

this pic you can see my crappy body work on the rear quarter. i should sand it and filler but i probally never will.

should i keep the 2tone or paint it all gery like the bottom of the doors??? i cant make up my mind.

The cans go down on those shocks. Your shocks won't work correctly becouse of the valving, when mounted upside down.
