I am getting read to purchase a 1990 Ford Diesel. I don't know a whole lot about diesel's, but  am willing to learn. The engine and tranny run really good, and the body is in awesome condition... does anyone have any suggestions on that year and engine??? Any info i should have???? Or web site's i can go to??? Thank you all...

If its a diesel you should goto banks power,  I dont think in 1990 they were even turboed back then,  but you can get a complete kit that will make it run like a champ!!
Life is too short!!!   Do something with it!!!

Yep, and right after you turbo your 250K+ miles engine, you get to rebuild it! What fun!

They might not have a lot of power, but they will last a long time. No (stock) turbo until it became a PowerSmoke in 95.

How different is it rebuilding a gas engine from a diesel???

not a whole lot, but why would you add something like that to an old engine? It's a waste of money unless you have cash to spare.

I would steer clear of that baby. Get something with a turbo unless you love the slow lane. Those non-turbo trucks are gutless and slower than a dual ultimate crawler on 28" tires.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

I wouldn't count on 80. It depends on the rear end ratio and if it has Overdrive but I think 80 is pushing it. Even it does, you are gonna be screaming down the highway and that ain't gonna be too comfortable.

I just talked to my Brother-in-law, and he said it did just fine doing 90 down the freeway... kinda made me made that they took it home without me...

It must have a good ratio in the axles. Cool. So did you buy it or are they just test driving it?

A magazine recently (last month or two) ran a history of Ford diesels...I think it was Diesel Power magazine. There was also an article about Ford diesel trannys (before anyone says anything...I know the tranny isn't diesel!). I'd head on down to the local library and go through their magazine section. I'll go through mine and see if I can narrow it down for you.

I thought early Ford diesels were abortions

dieselsmoke

ford had 2 different early diesels the 6.9 which you don't want and the 7.3 the 7.3 came as idi non turbo and idi turbo ( indirect injection ) both of them have problems with the glow plug system ( harness, controller )
the 6.9 will suffer electrolysis damage from bad grounds ( it will eat pin holes in the liners ) the fuel shut off sol. on the injection pump goes out, but can be replaced separately ( on a hot soak no start, pour water on the top of the pump to cool it off and if it starts, get a new fuel sol.)
I would Stay away from a 6.9 totally recommend the later 7.3 powerstroke, the late model 6.0 still has problems
as for the transmission selection the auto has problems with the torque converter clutch and the standard (zf) has problems with the dual mass
flywheel (now there is a kit to eliminate that flywheel) and you don't the trans mounted park brake, they hold like 6 oz. of oil and are expensive to replace, usually they are too far gone to rebuild
I have a friend that has idi non turbo c-6 4x4 that put a turbo from a powerstroke on it so they will live
but in all honesty the later model 7.3 powerstroke is the one you want,
they got all the bugs out then quit selling it the last 3 years of the powerstrokes haveall the bugs gone
and banks is the place to go for performance parts
I worked at a ford dealer for several years
if you buy a diesel ford sells a water conditioner p/n fw-15 that you should use

I agree with everything Dieselsmoke said except about Banks. Banks stuff is underpowered and over priced. I will say that it is safe however, but you can get a lot more for a lot less with other companies or by piecing your own stuff together.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

Well i got the truck, and i will post pics when i get the chance.... it's got the 7.3L and it runs beautifuly... The only thing i am really having an issue with is the tranny... looks like it was rode hard and put up wet, this dude didn't take care of this truck at all. The engine runs EXTREMELY strong though and the body is in great condition (plus rhino lined bed, :haha: to that dude)

I took a look at the tranny fluid yesterday, and it's low on it, so i figured i will put it up to proper level's and see what happens...

I haven't had a chance to read the thread yet, but have we established that the truck already has a 7.3 in it  :beerchug:

I do 80+ in my Ford no problem on 35" boggers :disturbed: :nana:

:gap:

Yeah, I'll admit the 90 trans may not like it though :disturbed: But I'll bet that thing will haul :moon: when towing... depending on how many miles are on it..

Shoot me the tranny specs I'll do some research for ya

:yesnod: It's on the lower front end of the trans.. on a bolt.. (depending on the model) may be a bit greasy or dirty that would make it hard to find. On the other model it is on the left :headscratch: of the tranny
