Clutch replacement
« on: Apr 06, 2007, 07:35:51 PM »
Sorry, newbie question...

I am replacing my clutch this weekend. According to Chilto I need a special service tool in order to remove the transmission shift lever. Any recommendations on where I can purchase this tool? ???

I use a pair of pliers. Push and turn counter-clockwise 15 degrees or so. Not much to it.

Thanks for the info. Got it done today. Was able to do it myself by putting a cinder block of the floor board of both the drivers and passengers side and run two 2x4's across like a header to a door. Then, I used a ratchet strap to raise and lower the unit.

Thanks for the assistance. Now I need to get out and try my new 4.7 Marlin case!

Re: Clutch replacement --- STILL HAVE NOISE
« Reply #6 on: Apr 15, 2007, 07:18:22 PM »
I needed a new clutch but I also had a noise coming from the tranny once speeds reached above 40 MPH, usually occurring once I hit 4th gear. The noise appears after I push the clutch in to shift or coast. It also shows up when I am cruising at freeway speeds and let off the gas. It sounds like the throw out bearing but, I replaced it and the pilot bearing. NOISE STILL THERE!!!!

Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a successful fix?

No. It's definately coming from the tranny. I have the cover off around the shifters so I can hear better as I travel down the road.

I have the same (EXACT) problem and have yet to find the cause. i've changed u-joints and checked everything. The noise wont go away, i was hoping it was the throw-out/pilot bearing but i guess not. :( lemme know if you figure it out, i'll do the same if i do.

When you had the tranny out did you see any input shaft play? My input bearing has gone out on me twice so this time I rebuilt the tranny with marlins heavy duty bearing kit. My noise was there all the time it just got louder the faster I went. Here are a pic of the bearing.

how hard is the replacement of the input bearing? Is it something 2 guys can do in a driveway without a press? Im planning on buying a new clutch throw-out/pilot bearing along with marlins bearing kit. Just want to make sure its something i can do. Thanks

The input bearing is one of the bearing that are easier to get off but you will have to take the tranny apart to get to it. The other bearings are kind of a pain to get to you will need a press or a long puller. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 8 on the technical scale. I did not do mine at home I did it at work on the weekend. Good luck if you decide to do it yourself.

highridin4x4, what kind of noise are you hearing?
I'm getting this wonderful grinding and screaming sound, but it sounds more like its coming from the rearend...
I figured pinion bearings are about fried since my trucks got over 350k and both the bearings in the front just puked all over themselves... (robbed the bearings off a buddies extra ifs parts :D$free$)
I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with bigger trucks (peterbilts) but it sounds like a truck when its in high overdrive...

The noise I was hearing sounded like worn out gears in the transmission 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th at first. Then I lost 4th gear altogether because 4th gear is on the inputshaft and the whole staft was moving out about a 1/4 inch.
