This may be a stupid question, but here it goes anyways.  I bought seals like this from Marlin last year.  Are these ones the same or are they upgraded from last years?
85 4runner Sr5, 22re, header, hot water shower, full exo cage, bobby long axles and hub gears, dual inchworm cases, 4.88 yukon gears, v6 spool in rear, lockrite up front, budbuilt skid plate, toyota rears up front, 4 link rear w/16" racerunner air shocks, 39.5" iroks on custom steel wheel w/aluminum beadlock ring.

never mind I answered my own stupid question by actually reading previous posts.

My brother and i just did a knuckle rebuilt on his 84' and put these new seals in his front axle....astonishing how much better they are than stock! I supose we'll find out this weekend if they are going to leak. The next time i rebuild my knuckle or break an axle on the trail i will definately use these!

intalled my marlin hd seals and they have an air gap with just the weight of the shoft side inner axle on it just like your picture with the stock seals.... i was under the impression that wouldnt be happening?

Remember, with our HD seals, an air gap is formed after 0.058" of axle deflection (displacement).

The benefit is that the Marlin Crawler HD seal is 168% better at this than the stock seal.

So our seals can handle up to nearly twice the axle movement without allowing any differential oil to enter the knuckle.

i read the write up and you had made a big deal that the stock seal made an air gap with only the weight of the axle. why is is that the new seals do exactly that also? the way im understanding it is that stock seals suck bad enough that they get an air gap with merely the weight of the axle and my marlin hd ones are doing exactly that.... maybe im missing something but the way it was described wasnt giving me that impression

Now comes the real shocker!
Here is the common aftermarket seal SITTING AT REST.
The weight of the axle causes an air gap to form without any external forces!!

So this commonly used seal can't even support the weight of the axle it is supposed to be sealing! I know this is not necessarily a design criteria of a seal, but since the birfeld and inner axle vibrate and deflect, it is awesome to know that the Effective Sealing Distance of the Marlin Crawler Heavy Duty Inner Axle Seal is an astonishing 164% greater than the common aftermarket seals! :clap2:

this is what im basing my confusion off of..... im not understanding why i have an air gap with the short side inner (no birf) resting on the seal

The air gap is to illustrate the improvement of our HD seal.
By placing a light behind the seal as in the photo above, I was able to take simple pictures that captured the gap being formed. A very nice visual illustration in terms of function as well as advertising.

The point is not the weight of the axle forming an air gap, but rather our HD seals can prevent an air gap beyond what the stock seals achieve. This means it will require a larger axle deflection or misalignment when using our HD seals in order to produce a similar oil leak with a non Marlin Crawler seal.

Our seals reduce the ability for oil to slip past which equals to no or less oil leakage into your knuckles

i fully understand what they are supposed to be doing... thats why i purchased them.... i was more bummed with the fact with my hd seals in it had an air gap shown exactly like the one you had of a picture of a stock seal so i found no improvement.... ive heard nothing but praise about them and dont doubt there quality and improvement of the oil issue but from the look of my seal i cant see how thats going to happen

Well, you need to use a dial caliper and get a good reading to see where the air gap is formed away from the center line of the seal. My test showed that our HD seals moved more than the 0.022" away from the center line from which the stock seal's air gap was first noticed.

You know at first we weren't sure how well they would hold up, so we a bunch of sets in a bunch of test rigs and after more than a half years worth of testing and R&R everything was looking perfect! So we began selling them :)

Let us know if it makes a difference or not! In more extreme cases, simply changing to a better engineered seal, like the :turtle: HD seal, won't fix a very very heavy oil leak. But it's great to know that smaller long-term leaks can be eliminated completely with our seals! :driving:

perhaps  toyotaboy, when you did your test the seals were warmer than when BigMike did his testing,  this would result in a softer seal.

#1 doubtful cause its about 60* here
#2 the seal shouldnt be displacing that much do to that slight of a temperature change given gear oil goes against them and can be warm from doing its job.

im just gonna run them and if they dont work ill call in... if they do work ill post back up

x2 it costs so Little more than the stock seal ....
I just installed one of those. I like it all around. My housing was leaking so I starting to dig in, the usual stuff all soaking in oil and no big deal untill I spent about 2-3 hours trying to remove the axle (bent housing) and cause of no martac or anything like that this was a big deal.
finally after I got that damn axle out I spent about 4 hours trying everything I could think off to set that housing straight.  :flamer: and eventually decided to call it straight enaugh, bolt it back together drive it till the new year and change the housing later.... I installed the birf.  the new marlin seal and have been driving it for a couple weeks now and voila.... no leak.

Hey guys,

We've heard through the grape vine that our seals have not been proven to work.

Well, take this on for size: These seals have been proven since the Winter of 2006 through the deserts of Panamint Valley, the rocks of the Hammers, the water crossings of Fordyce, the 10,000 ft high sierras of Dusy Ershim, the Sluice Box of Rubicon, the slick rocks of Moab, the mud of Tellico and the Great Smokey Mountains, trails in Arizona and Texas, the dunes of Pismo and Grover Beaches, and the drylands of Tierra Del Sol and Truck Haven.

These seals have been proven to stop leaks in any climate in over 20 countries, including USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany, Japan, Russia, Chile, Iceland, England, China, Norway, New Zealand, Guam, South Africa, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Philippians, Holland, Italy, Spain, and Denmark.

Marlin Crawler isn't just keeping America clean, it's keeping the world free from oil leaks!
