i have a harbor frieght bender too and when i tried to bend tubing it just started to kink it in the very middle. is your son using tubing or pipe for all of his cage work. if it is tubing what have you done to get it to not kink?

Last time I was at harbor freight they had a  better bender, its a pulling one, it mounts to the floor and is a manual version of what many shops use.  You can use heat though to minimize kinking its probably hard though,  I think that style of bender is more for heavy conduat for big electrical or possably exhaust where crimping is common.

what about packing the tube with sand? that might help...or get a real bender

My guys say they still want to kink..just go slow and not over a 45

CTorri

Guess what we have added to the driveway!? Yep another Toyota!  A friend of the boys is living here...well in the garage... for awhile and he wants to build a truck too!

Gittinit

Thats a nice collection right there! So who's is what the yellow is the sons rig, which one is dads, and which is the friends? I'm guessing the red truck is for parts, is it a runner?

Very nice!
How much damage was done in the roll?
I like the way the cage is braced behind the cab... Just might have to pull a little copying of it on my truck.

Yellow is sons and the dark blue is friends.  The extra cab is the current prooject (senior project for graduation) and it will be the sons daily drive (and some wheelin too I imagine!)  The red one was dads! It sort of became a doner!  Dad plans to build a formula toy for us!  Have 2 other doners off the property!  Bet you can never guess what out spare time involves!!  Keeps the kids out of trouble! (and dad young I think!)

CTorri

The roll was crazy!  There was very very little damage!  Broke a motor mount, but it landed upright and drove off!  The cage did exactly what is was made to do (thank god from a moms standpoint!)  Other son got it all on video and I just pulled this pic off.

Check out the official flop thread for the whole thing!  Don't know if you can really see it, but there is a brace that runs down the center of the cab to hood (through the front windshield area.)  That was the saver for the boys inside and the hood (I think)...keeps just that bit of distance between the truck and the rocks and heads!!

CTorri

Just looked on the flop thread - post # 364 and 365 on 2/27.  Chek it out!  That is what the boy lives for I think!  Have had a couple of others, but not like that one!

THAT YOTA IS SICK!!!... i think i am going to be checking out Harbor Freight for a tube bender.... hehe

Damn, I wish my family got into this as much as you guys do!

 Huge props to Mom and Pops for encouraging, helping, teaching your son at such a young age to enjoy getting a little dirty :gap:

I was fortunate to get into this @ 18, and my truck still isn't that well built, 4 years later

Thank you!  I feel pretty lucky to have kids that enjoy this more then a lot of the other CRAP out there!  As a mom I always know where they are...the garage!  Always very dirty but always in the garage if not on the trail!

I think the younger guys get a kick out of "helping"  -  little do they know, their brother gives them the "grunt work" (he had to do it for dad, so now it's their turn!)

The springs are 59.5 - he wants to try something new...and yes they are very long!  If the thing wasn't an extra cab the mounts would be touching!!!  Boys and their toys!   Well actually mom and daughter drive a Toyotas too!

CTorri

Theys guys just crack me up!  Little men!  Must be a mom thing!

twistedtoy92

haha! right on!! looks like me when i was younger... mom would get a little ticked cuz i was always tearing things apart and trying to modify whatever i could!!! at least they have already developed a GOOD hobby at a young age!! they will most likely stick to that the rest of their lives!!! and you sound like an awesome mom!!!! keep up the good work!!

This is funny because the only words i hear out of my mom is "is that thing ever going to be done?" I always give her the same reply, Its like our house a never ending project, usually i get yelled at or told to go outside.   :gap:

Pick and Pull Baby!!  Gotta love it!  They must be getting the idea tho...the prices are really going up!  I think my family might side with some of you (I have been known to be a pain in the butt about all the vehicles in the driveway)  But I get over it and do know that this is a good thing!  Plus I really do like being out on the trail!!

X2 My son is 8 and he loves wheeling, but hates working in the garage. He is always there when I need an extra hand, but the noise, sparks, and smell just turn him away. Someone in your family knows how to get the young guys interested. Is my son still too young, or will it just come with time?
