Shorter Driveline
« on: Mar 12, 2007, 03:00:47 PM »
Hello all,

I am building a rig that is very short with a 22RTE, but im having troubles with my driveline. The layout of my rig is making my rear driveshaft like 12" long that will be a serious problem with axle travel. Does anyone know of a trans and transfercase that could bolt up to the toyota motors to shorten the length of my driveline? that tranny is sooooo long. even if i could just swap the tranny that would help.

Things I dont want to change:
-position of motor
-location of axles

If this is not possible, could i still get decent travel with a link suspention in the rear? im just worried about driveline angles.

THIS WILL BE A DD DRIVER! so keep that in mind. Thanks

How far back is your engine to give you a 12" driveshaft? Did you move the axle very far forward?

A first gen tranny is shorter than a later model. The 1st gen trannys are a bit weaker too but they can be built stronger.  What trans are you currently running?

Pretty much what im doing is taking a 1983 yota single cab short box with a wheel base of 110" and shortening that to 74" wheel base. So my driveshaft goes from 58" to 22" I would also like to move the entire motor back a ways, preferably 6" if possible, so then D-Shaft goes to 16" long. That is also with a 4 speed trans. Im putting in a 22RTE and the 4 speed is not gonna take the strain, so I have to put in a 5 speed trans. (difference of 5 1/2") so then my D-shaft shrinks once again to an impressive 10 1/2". Which is really hurting.  Now I could try to not move the engine back which would give me a potential 16 1/2" shaft. But I need to move it back for a radiator. So here is where I come to my problem.

You can get an L52HD from marlin... that 5 speed transmission is the same length as 1st gen 4 speeds and should take quite a beating since it's built strong. I can't say I'm positive it'll take the strain of the 22RTE since that's somewhat up to driving style and how much torque you're getting out of it, but I'm sure marlin could tell you if it's up to the task. :dunno:

From their website...

"For heavy duty applications we offer our Exclusive L52HD. Invented by Marlin himself, we start with a L-series transmission housing and line bore it to accommodate larger main shaft bearings. A completely rebuilt, late model G54 gear set (1985-1988) is installed into the modified L-series cast iron housing, including the larger G series bearings. This upgrade is ideal for those that want to upgrade to a late style, stronger transmission but don't want the added length. The L52HD is a bolt-in replacement for L45, L50 and L52 transmissions."

Definately run a L-series transmission if this is a lightweight rig with a low torque engine.

If you look in The Capacity/Size/Weight/Length Thread, you will find the following information:
