power steering conversion
« on: Mar 08, 2007, 10:58:02 PM »
Hey guys
I just bought a power steering pump to install on my 82 that doesnt have power steering.  I put hysteer and the IFS box on it so all I need now is to install a power steering pump to help me out on the trails  :eyebrow:

I bought the power steering setup from an 88 4x4.  I went to install it today and the brackets were giving me a hard time and then when I got it bolted on I noticed that the belt wheel on the pump didnt line up with either of the 2 belts AT ALL.   Its a good inch or two away from either of the belts.  Although the mounting  bolts are the same for the earlier and older 22r/22re models, it seems the pump gets moves around a little bit in later models.

I can only see one way to install it....is there some weird trick??? Or do I need a bracket from an 82 power steering pump?

I have another question about the pump itself after this gets answered.

thanks for the help

EDIT:  seller has informed me that I need third belt for the pump.  I was thinking about that, but I figured it would be on one of the existing 2.

Anyone got a tripple crankshaft pulley?? help?!  :nerv:

yup, there is a little piece that actually bolts onto the regular 2 belt pulley...

yea, there's another pulley.
It's sitting in my box of parts for my PS conversion.

The guy I bought the power steering stuff from has the part for me.  Itll be a super easy transaction since I just bought the power steering from him about a week ago.  Thanks for the responses though

I cant wait to get the power steering working!!

I do have one question:
On top of the pump itself there are the 2 silver tubes for air hoses.  On my buddys 22re they go to the intake.  One goes before the throttle plate and the other goes on the intake past the throttle plate.  My other buddy has an 82 22r so I think im gonna look on his.  But wtf are they?  :headscratch:

The ports work as vacuum to tel the motor to idle up in low rpm situations. I have only ever seen those ports on efi equipped motors and never on a carbed motor. :twocents:

i have those same ports on the pump i put on my 82 which has a 22r.  all i need is a pulley and belt to finish it up.  so will the pump still work if those hoses are hooked up to anything?   hope this helps 82 hilux out too ;)

notice the 3rd row of pullys, and how the outside most pully bolts to the exhisting 2 pullys you already have.

Keep the pics and info coming if you can!!  Im waiting for the parts to do a ps conversion and would like to see where the pump gets squeezed under the distributor, where that bracket mounts, and where the tensioner mounts.  Also, the reservoir gets mounted near the firewall or something, doesnt it?  Any closeups would be a big help...thanks ---END HIJACK--

Great thread. Looks like it dead-headed right here. Any resolution to this issue? I'm about to do the same thing to my '91 4X4 Pickup.

there was no issue. the power steering all bolts right up. you just have to make sure you have the 3rd pulley that bolts onto the harmonic balancer. i can take pictures if you need help with it
