converting manual to power windows and lock: need help
« on: Mar 03, 2007, 03:28:45 PM »
Doing a manual to power window conversion. I seen a long while back a post about it I think on here but haven't been able to find it. I'm wanting to know what to do about the wiring. It appears the wiring for the power windows and locks is in the main harness. The truck that is getting the pwr windows doesn't have it in the main harness that I can find. I am thinking of cutting the insulation of the donor truck and getting the wires out of it and retaping them to make a separate harness for the pwr windows and locks. I thought I would check and see what anyone else has tried before I did this to see if I have missed something.

We just built our own wiring loom for the doors, and wired them up like in this pic...this is my whiteboard drawing of the connections to the plugs.

The driver's side switch locks out the pass side one if both switches are pressed at the same time...the way the Toyota engineers did this was really cool, but it was a real biatch to get my mind around it...they made custom switches with special connections inside, unlike any other switches i ever saw. Hope this diagram helps...the page # references are from the 85 Toyota factory service manual pdf here-------- http://www.truckporn.com/tech/FSM/Toyota/

thanks for the info Oddmar. I guess I am going on ahead and strip out all the pwr window and lock wires out of the main loom in the donor truck and retape the pwr windw wires to make a standalone wiring harness for the pwr window and locks.

Which is the way anyone who has to work on these trucks would have built it in the first place, huh?

Yep Oddmar you would think that is how they would have been built. This is my first toy so its learning something new for me. I thought it was going to be easy when I discovered there was already a plug for the fact rear defogger and then discovered they didn't run a wire up through the cab to the rear glass but I have already taken care of that, and installed the fact rear defrost glass. I almost have completed removing and labeling the wires from the donor truck for the power windows and have started retaping them to make a loom. I probably could have used the whole harness from the 86 in the 88 truck but looking in the Mitchel manual I see a few differences.
