82 sr5 dash cluster swap.
« on: Feb 06, 2007, 10:49:37 PM »
I bought a sr5 dash cluster with the tach. I want to switch this into my truck which doesnt have the tach. I would like to know if this is supposed to just plug right in or do i have work ahead of me. I plugged it in and the tach didnt move so i just unplugged it. If anyone knows how this works please let me know. It looks like to me i have to run a wire from the terminal near the coil but im not sure.

we did the samething on an 85 but we just plugged the gagde cluster in tach and all and the tach worked, no other tinkering or anything, but im thinking thats becuase we converted the truck to EFI, and i think the computer is what made that difference, did you have all the other plugs plugged in, including the speedo?  i know that probably didnt help much, sorry.

Attention Glen!!!!  Glen installed a cluster with tach into his 79, and the tach worked without modifying anything.

The cluster could be broke. Was the tach working when removed from original truck. My buddy had an sr5 and his tach never worked. Try another cluster

Well i dont really have another one to try but it had a little autozone tach in it but it was hooked up to the little lead right by the coil. It worked fine but i like the stock look better. I was just thinking that maybe i would need to run a wire up to the tach but im going to go try it here in a little. thanks

i don't understand why toyota hates tach's...it's suprisingly different to find them on older trucks and cars!

Maybe someone want to try my new cluster on one of their trucks? None of the blinker lighs come on and when you turn the lights on the charge light goes off and there is no backlight. The guy i bought this from said it worked fine when it came out and it is in really good shape. so help.............please  :help:

when i did this on my 82 i had to pull out a bunch of the wires in the connector and swap them around, it took me a couple of hours and alot of trial and error but i finally got all the instruments working.  I ran a wire straight from the tach service hookup to the back of the tach because mine didn't have a wire.  I'll try and get some pics up later... good luck

http://www.barneymc.com/toy_root/techtalk/accessor/sr5_gage.htm

I printed the chart on the link above and followed it,it was a bit confuing at first but just follow it.  I had to run my own wire for the tach with a home made connecter for the plug on the insturment panel, and also my tach did not work when wired into the green plug in the picture it worked off the other one.  Search aroun it's been done hundreds of times, lots of info out there.
