im going to be putting some 4" trail gear springs on my truck pretty soon. i couldnt afford the mc one :( but it should be ok. im also waiting for the extra $150 for new shocks, so ill have new suspension, but no shocks lol. next big project is the engine. i want to get at least 150hp out of it, but im not exactly sure how im going to go about it

3rz will do the trick

Ive thought about the 3rz, amongst many other things. I'm just kinda wary about engine swaps. If a 3rz were to go in, then i would be the one doing it. Even though i can wrench a little, im no expert. Would I need a new drivetrain to go with it? Radiator? Engine mounts? Etc? If im gonna do an engine swap, why not just put a 5vz, or a chevy 4.3, or a 7M from a Supra?

Finally got my truck back and went on my first wheeling trip in the longest time.  first we went to bridal veil falls:

squaw peak rd:

Yota87Truck

I was going on the interstate today 70 or 80 MPH and I shifted down from 5th to 4 and it made a slight metallic grinding sound.  While on the interstate I shifted a couple more times between 4th and 5th gears.  When I got off the interstate not to long after I pushed the clutch petal in and it made the same sound only much worse, but the noise only occurs when I have the clutch pushed in.   I have had a simalar problem to this before, once when one of my  motor mounts came off and a couple of times when my transmission was loose so I assumed that is what it was, but when I went to tighten the bolts they were all fine.   Clutch was new 20K or so miles ago.

So I.... had my wife drop me off at school this week and I have been walking home and then working on the trannie...
Last night I got it dropped.  I started tuesday afternoon and last night I was able to get it all tore down and the flywheel to carquest to turn it.

I am pretty sure it was the pilot bearing.  It was covered in rust colored fine dust and the throw out bearing looked plenty greased up, but I haven't had a chance to deeply inspect it.

Plan for tonight is to get new pilot bearing, inspect everything else and get the trannie bolted up.  maybe wiring done, but i doubt it.

Here's some pics(cell phone):

Got it all back together(minus the shifters).  So tomorrow i will put my shifters back on and take it for a test run.

Glad you've got it all back together. Any plans for a sas anytime soon?

hey Yota87Truck i noticed your wifes pictures of the fj cruisers in her signature while reading through your thread.  i think it is the middle picture there is a black FJ jumping on a gravel road.  i built that FJ!  my dad is driving in the picture.  we did ALOT of mods to that FJ, and when it was finished we had a photo shoot done, which was published in Toyota 4WD Owner Magazine.  it was just kind of surprising to see that picture!

I love that FJ!!! its one of my favorite pictures.  I have it on my phone background.  It's an awsome picture.

Do you have a buildup page on it or a place where there are pics of it?

Actually at first I wasn't a fan of a SAS.  I just didn't trust my own abilities, but the more i look into it the more I realise that is what I will probably end up doing( i was debaiting getting a pre 85 or a rig that was already SAS).  right now my truck is mostly a DD and I am probably going to wait til I get a tacoma to replace it and drive the tacoma as a DD and then I will turn my 87 into a more extreme off road rig.  At that time I will probably do a SAS and a crawl box and go for tires in the 35-37 in range.  But right now im going to school full time and money is tight.  So most likely at least 5 years before a SAS.  i wish it could be sooner.

pilot bearing job is finished.  I took it for a short drive around the block.  Everything looks good.  Now next on the agenda is brakes all around.  I'll be doing that in school so that will be a nice use of class time.

Friday the 6th wheeling trip, I needed to go wheeling bad and since I had just fixed my transmission problem I decided to go.  I ditched Biology cause it the only class I have on friday and headed to the hills with my buddy.  Here's some pics, it was rainy all day and tons of fun.

Yota87Truck

I went wheeling again last night out at the same spot, tons more mud, lots of fun.  I'll try and get some pics up of that soon.  I don't have too many from it though.  it was snowy and muddy.

5 Mile Pass (Feb 20, 2009)

Little Moab (Feb 21, 2009)

When first starting to pull him out I kinda feathered the clutch and gassed it, but my dires didn't spin.  The second time i dumped the clutch more and this got traction from the engine to the tires.  I think I had an oil leak issue on the clutch which caused the slipage, but it did hurt my pressure plate.  I could have gotten him out but before I did a suzuki pulled up and hooked on to me and that got him out fairly quickly.  I drove my truck for about a week after in incident before the pressure plate gave out.
The guy on the ATV had a toyota crawler, but he was playing on his banshee that day.

Result of pulling 69 GMC out of mud...

I drove around for about a week before my pressure plate finally split in two, I think it broke in one place origionally and I was still able to drive but it was just harder to shift.

At first I thought it was my trannie so I bought a trannie at a pick a part place to rebuild in my transmision class.  The more I thought about it the more I kept thinking it had to be a clutch related issue.  I am glad I rebuilt my trannie becaue before it did not shift from 4th down to 3rd, it would only go to third from 2nd.  So now I have a smooth shifting transmission a new clutch and fixed the oil leak

when i first got my truck it was missing the boot on the shift fork.  then we went to a local ORV Park, and i forgot and tried going thru a 3 ft deep puddle about 30 ft long, got to the other side and couldnt climb the small hill out, so i backed out, and went about my business(it was the last morning), drove 7 hours home.  next week daily drive to work, engine revving kinda high, then POP, and no gears.  then i found that.

put 2 and 2 together and bought a shift fork boot(and a marlin 1200# clutch)

sorry thread hijack over(any other ?'s, PM me guys)

No problem... Sweet pics... that's crazier than mine

Yota87Truck

SOLD IT!!! I got $1300 cash out of it... I didn't want to get rid of it but my tacoma is so much better and this truck didn't have solid front axle or EFI so it wasn't worth the extra time and money to convert into a crazy off road rig.  So eventually I would like to build up a truck of this age but who knows, maybe i will just end up building up my taco!

Build that taco! that Would be sweet!
