How insane to swap from an auto to a standard?
« on: Feb 21, 2004, 10:09:01 PM »
Generally speaking, I think I already know the answer.  Its a no-brainer as in nobody with a brain would do it.  :hammer:
But in a "its late, I've been surfing the net for too long and I still haven't found/gotten a 90's 4Runner I want" sort of way, I figured I would ask anyway. I came across a rig that had really been set up nicely, but it had an automatic tranny and the chain drive transfercase. That is a killer for me. I've had that combo in the past and would never do it again. It seems like the best "waiting to break" combo out there.
How insane would it be to even try to swap out a 5sp and a gear drive transfercase into a 90s 4Runner with a v6 and an automatic?  My main concern would be any differences in the engine that would not accept the tranny front shaft/pilot bearing/flywheel et al, and especially any differences in the ECU.
I'm unwisely assuming that the basic engine configuration would not be a problem, but consider it possible that wiring changes and installation of an ECU for a v6-standard transmission combo could be cause for alarm.
I really never thought it would be so damn hard to buy another 4Runner!   :confounded:

Would prob just be easyer too find a 5 speed runner and even better if someone would have swaped in a 3.4 motor into a 94 95 body style truck with a 5 speed and crawler.
If you didn't make it, and it ain't broke, you didn't try hard enough.

Gas hog, full time transfercase, high insurance, big ass truck....uh, nope, no thanks
I confess, I do like the looks of them though and spent a fair amount of time studying up on them.

There should be no major problems swaping in a 5 speed.
The crank is the same, so the pilot bearing and flywheel will bolt right up
The ecu will need to be changed to a manual brain.
The starter wire will need to be jumped when the netural saftey switch is removed will the auto trans.
This means you will not have the factory equipped manual clutch safety switch. (Your runner would start without the clutch pushed in.)

The firewall will need to be hole sawed to accept the manual pedal/clutch master cyl assm.

No difference in emission control compontents

Center consol is completely difference, and I recall the auto style even attaches to the bottom of the dash.
The 5 speed version requires a boot for the t/case lever.

This conversion will take time, but is can be done:thumbs:
