Any reason a 3-core radiator upgrade would be a bad idea?
« on: Jan 23, 2007, 09:51:52 PM »
While everything is obvious as to why one should put a 3 core if it's available, I'm wondering if there may be any reasons at all not to do it?  Any chance for any negative affect on the whole system in any way?

Thanks.

Hmmm...fan clearance is about all I can think of, longer warm up times...the fan issue could be resolved with electric fans though, I'd do it if I had one

More weight, harder on the radiator support, more expensive to change your fluids as there is more of it.... ummmm more restriction for airflow via its larger cross section, larger area to collect more bugs, etc.

If you wheel in an area that gets hot in the summer time or you do a lot of hard wheelin then it will help to keep things cooler. there is no reason not to do it, i just ordered a 3 core radiator for my 85 Toyota truck, i ordered a radiator for an 85 4Runner it a 3 core and it bolts right in same as stock. i ordered my radiator from radiator express, it was about 139 dollars plus shipping.

I run a 3 row out of a second gen in my first gen without issue.  Never had a problem with longer warmups, but the fan clearance issue rings true!  I have a half moon design on the inside of the radiator now   I did hafta do a little tappy tappy on the bottom corners so I could close the hood though  :_oops:

there's no way that i could run my flex-a-lite with a 3 core.  :shake_head: the stock 2 core only gives me about a half inch from the idler pully and i've already broke a blade from hitting a dip to hard... well maybe it was a small atv jump, :outtahere: but still no three core with a black magic.  :twocents:

but what if you lf the plan is to do a three core and an electric fan combo with a temp sensor in dash. I drive up long hills and 10 miles up she gets hot and I've seen the 2 row can be a little less efficient on slow hill climbs 2nd and 3rd,  But even then with 2 row and a good fan, shroud system, it should seem to be adequate    ???

I used a 3 core Modine for my 3rz swap and am using the stock fan and shroud. It cools the motor well, never goes above 1/2 mark on the temp gauge. Have not had it on the trail yet, we'll see how it does this summer.

My 86 turbo 4Runner came with a 3 row (obvious) and it never hurt my radiator supports. It also gave me somewhere to store all that extra coolant that I could never seem to fit into a 2 row. :gap:

I think its so funny, most people are, you have to make it cooler!!!!!!!!! Cooler cooler cooler!!!!!!! But a engine has to reach a certain temp to run right.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Oh, so running the cold side of my A/C compressor through my radiator was not a good idea?

One of my parts trucks came with a nice, fat, tall 3 row wolverine radiator that landed in my 80.  Well, not so much landed as fit with a bit of lower end massaging and hood bumpstop adjustment.  But the end results are great, and it even runs cool sitting in traffic in the redding summer heat with no shroud.  Only reason I would change it is if it was no longer usable.  Fan clearance is tight, but not so tight it doesn't work.

One of my first "upgrades" was a 3 core turbo radiator in my 85 4runner. It is still there.
