3.0 Question
« on: Jan 19, 2007, 08:50:59 PM »
I'm looking at a 94 Camry with a 3.0 V6 for a friend that is interested in buying, it all looks ok except that I'm wondering if the 3.0 in the Camry is the same engine that comes int the trucks and does it have the same issues. Does anyone know if it is the same engine and has the same problem?

I believe it's basically the same block, just different heads, twin cam I think :dunno: .  Not sure if they had head problems, but I've never heard of any.

I think it is a very similar motor, but if it has different heads, you won't have the same issues.  Call the dealer, and ask them if they've had a recall on those as well :dunno:

Yes, it is the same 2958cc engine as the Hilux 3VZ-E, but the Camry uses 'F' heads meaning "Economical Twin Cam" whereas the Hilux variant uses single cams.

Hilux: 3VZ-E
Camry: 3VZ-FE

Break down:
"3" = 3rd-generation and 2958cc
"VZ" = VZ Engine Block Family
"F" = Twin Cam with Steep-Angeled Valves for better Fuel Economy
"E" = Electronic Fuel Injection

 Did the 3VZ-FE  have the same headgasket problems because of the different heads?

I am not sure.

I know that the heads were designed by Yamaha (as is the 4A-GE heads, and others) and that not many parts are interchangeable. Different intake bolt patterns, exhaust, nearly every piece was changed despite it still being a 3rd generation VZ block.

I have a friend who tried putting the FE heads on the Hilux 3VZ. I do not know how many complications there were/were not, but I do know that since the Camry engine was transversely mounted (FF), the distributor is on the right-side of the engine as well as the throttle body. What that means if you try to swap it into a Hilux (FR configuration), not only will the distributor interfer with the firewall, but also the Throttle Body is pointing at the firewall. So modifications to the intake manifold plenum and also relocating the distributor to run off of the front cam gear (direct like on a 20-valve 4A-GE, and others) will definitely be required to run the Camry engine in a Hilux.

I've worked in a TOyota Dealership parts dept. for almost 3 years, and I havent seen the head gasket being an issue consistently.  No recall on them that I can find.
You should be fine with it.
