Headlight conversion
« on: Jan 10, 2007, 06:21:58 PM »
ok...ive seen brief mention of this before, but for cheap on ebay i can get 79-81 style round headlights, the headlight doors(bezels), and the round buckets.  Has anyone converted the 82-83 squares to rounds, and will it work with just the mentioned parts, and while keeping my existing 82 grill??  While im at it, id like to make some custome shackles.  I'd ideally go tubular, with some DOM, but i dont have a notcher...so for simplicity and uniqueness, Ive been considering some thick square tubing.  Are there any structural reasons or issues to avoid making them like this???  Thanks for any input

no reason you cant use round tube for the shackles and they would look way better. those notches are easy 90's you can do with a chop saw. now wheres that notching tube with a chop saw thread

thanks, ive actually seen the chop saw notching thread....i would probably do it with the paper towel roll template...but i just didn't want it to come out all butchered.  I also thought the square would be pretty unique, but i think ill opt for the round. Man it would be nice if we could all have a machine shop worth of benders and notchers and stuff in our garages, huh?  By the way, would a millermatic mig with gas do the trick on DOM?  Not sure if it has special welding properties or anything like chromoly does.

yes that welder would be fine, DOM is just the proccess used to form the tube. Drawn Over Mandrel. Welds the same as HREW or CREW.

I changed out the round ones to square ones in a 79 used 83 buckets and grill, I had to drill some holes and use some 1 1/2" 10mm bolts I think 4 on each bucket, it was really easy good luck.

Would it be possible to give a 85 the round eye treatment?
