new body panels for '79-83
« on: Jan 08, 2007, 06:50:03 PM »
Hi, first post so if I screw something up, sorry.

Anyhow I am looking to buy a new hood and fenders for my '80.  Does anyone have experience with the really cheap (new) tins available at my local wrecking yard?  They quoted by $110 for all three! My rig is no show piece and I am NOT doing a white glove restoration, but I dont' want to have to bend, bang and tweak these just to make them fit.  What about the availability of OEM pieces from Toyota?
Thanks folks!
Oh yeah, this forum rocks! Iv'e spent many hours here (don't tell my GF)

From my experience, it seems like the aftermarket body panels fit really well on a lot of the import (Japanese) vehicles. On the other hand, I've noticed some real difficulty getting some of the aftermarket panels to fit well on the domestic vehicles... not that it requires a hammer, just some serious fiberglass-esque gaps. :dunno:

Isn't that kinda the norm for american vehicles anyway?  Try the marble trick, only to have the marble fall through the gap!

:ha_ha: I think you've got a point there. But none-the-less, it does seem like the gaps get BIGGER.  :yikes:

Well since no-one has posted any horror stories about the cheapo panels, I will try themn out for myself.  $110 for an new front end (minus paint) sounds good to me.   :biggthumpup:Thanks for the input folks.

So here are the results, I managed a decent job on the paint, at least the match is close. I still need to even up the gaps.  The panels fit 90% perfect, and needed a little filing and grinding to bolt up. Wish I could post a pic...

Is this something i could buy and have shipped to me in Illinois? I just bought an '82 Pickup and could really use new fenders...info/ location/ weblink would be sweet.
