I like to have a manual so that I can pick the gear I want, and I also like my manual so that if the engine is under to much of a load you can press in the clutch a bit and give it some gas.  If you have an auto you have to find nuetral and hope to God it doesn't go into reverse.  There are alot of times on the trail too that i can let the manual trans do all the work and treat it just like a auto trans if that makes sense = low gears.  Also bumping the clutch is a good technique to get over rocks,  and breaking a u joint or short shaft  :shhh: hope this helps

Yea what he said... except I have bad knees and the clutch thing just aint for me it all boils down to what you like to drive on the road not alot of clutch work but on the trail without the proper gears you will have alot of shifting so it boils down to what your camfortable with

I would recommend a Auto. The AW4 is a great tranny and lasts for a while. The AX-15 not so much. Manual is going to come with 3.07 factory gears which suck for anything over stock size tires. Auto will have 3.73's which will do a bit better. I ran my 33's with stock gears for just about year and it wasnt horrible. If your planning axle swaps or re gears then obviously that wont be an issue. I just like having an Auto, more comfortable. I rebuilt my tranny year and half ago and its got a bit over 165K miles on it. I use to tow every weekend with my XJ,my boat or dirtbikes and it did great.

well the AX-15 is an exa;ent tranny for crawlin problum is cherokees dont come with it. hey come with a pugoe(sp) and there crap. they go out al the time and its hard to find replacement parts for em. i realy recomend a 5sp AX-15 they have awsome capabilaties off road what i had in my cherokee before i got a toyota lol. but if you like not having to use a clutch an auto is good as long as you mess with the computer. theres a kit you can install you trivck it into keeping the tranny in 1st. but whatever you deside have fun and god luck

Not A Toy

i have a automatic trans, its got 115,000 miles on it and it still shifts great and everything. a buddy of mine has a 90 xj with 180,000 miles on it and it has a automatic and its in the same boat strong fast shifts. but i agree it boils down to a bunch of things. if you have one leg, or short ones you may wanna buy the auto. manaul is good for serious serious crawling.

Personally I like autos, they crawl well without having to change gearing in the tcase just lower the ring and pinion to match the tires and you are good to go. I would invest in a good trans cooler since you'd be generating a bit more heat when you are crawling. The only down side to an auto is downhill. :yikes:
