Best way to run exhaust on 4Runner?
« on: Jan 03, 2007, 08:28:14 AM »
I need to have an exhaust made for my 84 4Runner.  I've got a cheap muffler and plan on running 2.25 piping.  I plan on having them tuck the exhaust as high as possible.  Should they turn the muffler sideways to gain some clearance or just leave it flat?  Where should I have the tail pipe exit?  I don't want to just have the exhaust dump right after the muffler, I plan on having my daughter ride in the back.  I've seen people run the tail pipe through the rear suspension near the rear shackle, is that an OK place or just out the back?

ive had 4 different exhausts on my runner...do it right and take it all the way back-otherwise fumes like to recirculate and come in the truck-thats bad, mine is 2.5 inch-muffler turned upright and tucked higher, and it exits on the side at the back of the rear bumper

2.25 inch off of a thorley header to a magnaflow ran just like yours crawler dan and have had no clearance issues and sounds great.  Little ricy but deep not like a Honda civic.  And just to let you know magnaflow has a nation wide lifetime warranty which is kinda nice if you do happen to rip it off or it just wears out.

Yes , run it out the side. If you run it straight back under the tailgate you will get fumes inside with the back window open.

mine used to dump out the side behind  the shackle...loved it.
SUspension changes caused me to run it straight out the back...hate it. Fumes even with window closed.  Stick it out the side and be happy  :gap:

I just wanted to make sure you ran the exhaust through the top of the spring in front of the shackle.  Or is it behind the shackle?

run it in front of the shackle. That is how it is from the factory, it works the best.

Sweet, thanks again CrawlerDan.  I'm going to wait until I get my rear lift on before I take it over to my buddies exhaust shop.
