So I just had this great idea to see who has broken a birfield the worse. The winner gets, um, well nothing but itd still make for some cool pictures. Make sure you include a picture as well as tire size and what the hell you did!

yotaboy79

first one just being stupid

second one turning around on the trail then i got pissed off and drove about a hundred yards down a gravel road with the drivers tire locked up then my steering locked up and i found the ditch

Damn has N.E. one busted the outer shaft off the bell like I have? This was just the other day, just messing around seeing how high I could climb up a tree full lock to the left  w. 36/13.50s. Pretty sweet xmas present/

_HOIST_

Awesome, mine trashed upper and lower steering bearings, the inner, the inner oil seal, brass hub bushing, and I'm going to have to deburr the hell outta the inside of the housing.

Hyena

i spit the guts out of my treated longfield, i drove the 5 miles out of the rubicon with it still in there.  destroyed the upper trinion bearing and the oil seal.  funny thing was it didn't just pop, it started as a ticking and then got louder and louder as drove on.  figured it was already done for and i only needed 3 wheel drive to get out anyway.

Mine arent that cool other then i broke just 2 birfs. First time was my old truck, 1981 longbed locked in the front and rear with 37s. Second one was in my 1986 4runner SAS'd using the 1981 axle/locker/birfs and also running 37s.

First one:
Fordyce, backing uphill, turning right, not on it at all

Second one:
Highlakes in the snow, backing on a slight uphill, straight, idling
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

GET IT!!!

Damn, I think i'm going to keep one bearing from each one I break and see how many I can collect over the years. Anyone tried out the birf eliminator kit? Its obvious to me now that treated longs CAN be broken so I dunno what my next major upgrade is going to be...

here are 6 out of the 9 i have blown up, 2 of them i threw away along time ago, and the other one is still in the axle.  looks like its time for chromoly 30 spline birfs

_HOIST_

I'm suprized none broke the bell off the shaft. Nice pic with the 3 cases.

snowshoebrue

luckily i have only broke one so far.  it was an old style longfield

boggerunner

thanks, most of them were broke with duals and 35 boggers, and a couple were snapped with 33 mtr's with 1 t-case and 4.37 axle gears, but i do have lincoln lockers front and rear

boggerunner

looks like someone found a good use for harbor freight ads

Snowrunner

I dont have any pics of what I did but I was up at a mudbog in idaho and did several runs through the mud. Pulled out 2 dodges then hit the small crawling course they had and thats when it broke. Sounded like a big tree breaking in half just kinda crunched. When I pulled it out found that I had broke the shaft off at the bell, the bell was also grenaded along with the star inside. Looked like birfield stew in there. That was a stock birf with 35's dual cases and arbs front and rear with 5.29s. All the mud runns and pullin on the dodges was with a heavy right foot. It finally broke when I was just putting up the crawlin course.

boggerunner

got the other birf out today, here is whats left

Anyone else have a problem with the broken birf marring the crap out of the inner part of the axle housing? I damn near thought I was going to have to replace my whole axle!

i busted a bell   a few weeks ago,   dang ball got down in the knuckle  and wouldnt let me turn,   but  i drove the 3/4 mile home  by backing up to turn

That is why its recomended that you stop as soon as the breakage occur and replace the birf. Afriend of mine scarred up the seal surface on his hosing and he has to use rtv with each new seal. He also has a lot of trouble getting the new seals in, and he even cleand up the scratches as best he could.

mine wont let seals work either, but ive never stopped in the trail to replace a birf, i just drive home with 3 point turns, i had to drive home with both birfs blown, and a bent to fuk tierod, heres a pic

Gittinit

I guess those birfs need the gearoil more than your ring and pinion anywayse. :shakehead:

not anymore, using one of my unmolested 85 housings for the rebuild

_HOIST_

Did the same exact thing, had to go in reverse to turn right at all. The ball dented the hell out of my housing so definatley looking for a new one. I'm going to have to deburr and sand it pretty good to re-use it. Thus alone makes me want to buy 30 spline longs!

Here's a Profield for ya.  We had just started our first day at Moab and I wasn't even on the trail yet

It stipped my Cromo inners too

derek

my broken 30 spline long.
trying to climb a 3 ft ledge onto a uphill rock face. was on the throttle a little and heard a clang, clang, clang.
thought it was a ring and pinion at first, but it was the long.

topar

I broke the left birf at Uwharie had to debur the heck out of it.  Just put 30 spline longfields in with Cromoly hub gears and birfs.  Well see if the seals hold up or not.  Had to do a lot of clean up on them.  No pics though.
