Crossmember nut broke...fixes?
« on: Dec 26, 2006, 03:21:58 PM »
While I was taking out my 4 bolts that hold the crossmember under the xfer case in, one of the nuts inside the framebroke loose.  Joy!  I had to use a sawsall and cut the bolt off.  Now, what would be the best fix?  Just use 3 bolts?  Thread in a larger self tapper?

Got my Marlin 4.7case today

Just drill it out and use some grade 8 bolts/nuts/washers from OSH

Hmm..so drill all the way through the top of the frame too and run a long Grade 8 through?

Is your frame open or closed? I have an open frame and was able to do it just through the bottom part.

I had the same thing happen to my old 4Runner. I ended up running 3 bolts on that side for about three years with no issues. It might not have been the "best" solution bt it never caused any problems.

Center punch the bolt & start with a small drill bit & work your way up to a larger drill bit. Be careful not to damage the threads that are in the frame. Spary WD40 or what ever you have to lube the treads. Drill it upto 1/4" & try using an easy out or a drill bit that drills left hand.

Scratch that, I miss read. Now is the time to replace you x-member with one that bolts to the back of the transfer case.

I take it the tacks on the nut to frame broke so the nut/bolt were just spining. I dont belive you will ever get a drill bit to start unless you could hold the nut from spinning.  3 bolts should be all you need to keep everything together. If you were to use a self taping bolt it wouldnt be contacting much meat with the nut gone from the inside of the frame.

just run 3.  it isn't going to hurt anything.  most toyota's i see either have 1 or even 2 bolts missing per side.
