your opinion on Genuine gears?
« on: Dec 10, 2006, 03:12:42 PM »
ok i have set a dozen sets of toyota's using genuine gears including my own, i just finished setting up my buddies and after a month of wheeling/ daily driver the pinion gear is completely gone  :shocking:

it was all good when i finished it, everything torqued, back lash was right around 7 cleaned and the shimming was set perfect right around 115 was the total on the shim thickness. all the rases new all new bearings and gear set, the pinion depth was great and the pattern was spot on according to the charts so why did his pinion break? i have around 5 thousand on mine and they are still working great? maybe a bad batch of gears? :headscratch:

nope they are all like that. Everyone I know that has them has been through a few sets. Not worth it IMO. Just get some yukons or precision gear. have them set up correctly and be done with it. Gears are not something to be skimping on cash for

The steel used for these gears are either to soft or to hard. A hard ring gear with a soft pinion gear =no pinion teeth. These gears are cheap becouse the steel used to make them is inferior. Just imagine how cheap they could make them if they didn't warrenty them. :twocents:  This brings to mind that tommy boy movie with Chris Farley/David Spade don't buy those ketchup popscicles ya crazy eskimo!

Most of the other manufacturers don't need to waranty there products becouse they are high quality rather than crap guarnteed to be crap! If you find a manufacturer of quality componets who dosn't stand behind there product then you need to find a new product. At least your in the right place Marlin stands behind what he sells for good reason =he sells good stuff!

I didn't even get to run them. The ring gear bolts kept stripping out before I could get them setup. The holes were drilled too large so ther wasn't much thread to bite into.

Save your money and get Yukon gears, they are a much better gear.

The G/G R&P are s&*t. I had a set of 5.29's  within 4 months I blew them up. The pinion was fine but the ring look like some one cut the teeth in half. Thats my .02. Later Joe

:nope: I wouldn't do that to you, I sent them back to 4wp and they replaced them with Precision Gear. Those were the 5.71's anyway.  :shakehead:

I've been through two sets of genuine gear's. Front and rear have both been destroyed, on the back I'm not real sure what happened, but they were trashed, on the front I stripped about half of the teeth off the pinion gear, took everything else with it, carrier, quicklok, and ring gear.
