noob with '85 pick up
« on: Feb 08, 2004, 11:05:53 PM »
hello folx

i'm rebuilding an '85 toyota 4WD pick up (EFI). i've had 2WD toys before but i really wanted a 4WD 'cause i may be moving to snow country.

the truck came without an engine and trans but i managed to locate a 5 speed 4WD trans/engine from a wrecked '89. unfortunately its a 22R and my truck is EFI.

the question is, do i locate a 22RE and tweak it to squeeze some more horses out of it. *or* do i swap something else in?

i have access to a 7MGE (from a cressida) but i hear car to truck swaps are not legal in california.

what's involved in swapping a tacoma 4 cylinder motor? is it easier to swap engine + trans?  can i get an adaptor for my current trans? thanks!

Boy it all depends on your budget and mechanical knowledge

84 runner,

my mechanical skills are fairly good, i don't have too much experience with toyotas but i've done full restoration projects (vw's mostly). welding mounts, wiring, etc. is not too scary.

i'd like to keep costs down if possible which probably means buying parts/wrecked vehicle. bottom line, i know this is going to cost me some cash but i'd like to do it right and end up with something that will be worth keeping for a long time. thanks

well you for sure want to go with EFI and the newer the 4 banger the more you get out of them.  As for that supra motor I really don't know much about that particular one.

hay if you have all the efi stuff in the truck Im pretty shure all you need is the head if you got all the intake wiring. From what iv been told the only difference is the head between the 22R and the 22RE that would be the cheepest I think GOOD LUCK
