I am looking for a older toyota and found a 1985 x-cab with EFI and the solid axle of corse. So my question is this truck has 265K miles on the 22re. Do you think this truck is good or not with this much miles? This vehicle will not be towed, but driven to the trails and is not my DD. Buy or no Buy? Thanks in advance!!! :driving:

i would say get it, but plan on possibly needing to rebuild the engine, and replace worn parts suspension/body wise and things of that nature

So you think it will still run good for like maybe a year or no? I really wouldnt have the money to do a new engine swap. I was hoping to put most in to suspension and such. How much would a whole new 22re cost?

its hard to estimate with very little info about it over the internet about a vehicle you are looking at getting... if you know it isnt going to be a daily driver and know you will need to do some work on it, then it wont hurt as bad, but it does have 300k on it, and should realize that it is probably not going to be turnkey with no problems at all....

Depends on how much they want for the truck.  It's hard to tell with a truck that has that many miles will last a year or so.  Any truck can throw a rod.  If it's for the right, I would grab it.  A quality rebuild at a shop will cost you about $1,000-1,200.

79coyotefrg

my 79 has near 400,000  on it,  dont worry about mileage,  its just a number,  look at the truck itself,  start it  and see how it runs

if it wont start at all its easily worth $750

The cost on it is 2,250 and the carfax is clean. So I am thinking about it. I would test drive it and check all the stuff before i buy it. What should i look for just in case?

as far as carfax, its a joke, especially on a 20+ year old truck.....

ask to see the actual title, it will say if it is salvaged or what....

its also possible for a vehicle to be totalled but not reported that way and rebuilt, in that case carfax has no idea

How many owners?  Look for body damage/ matching paint/panels.  Look under the truck, around the truck, exhaust, etc. for rust.  Check the motor for leaks.  see if you can figure out if it is parked in its regular spot (checking for leaks, amount of leaks)  if the motor is nasty, but the ground under it is clean, chances are it leaks a lot and he moved it.  Make sure you look at it, and start it from a completely cold position.  Some issues are evident under a cold start, but not once the truck has warmed up.  Do a compression test, and look at the plugs.   Drive it, and check for alignment, uneven tire wear, surging, sputtering at different RPMs, lagging in power at certain RPMS.  I didn't see if you were in CA, but if you are, get a look at the smog infor from the last time it was done.

Just as a point of reference...
I bought my 85 runner for $1500 and other that rust on the rear quarters she was running well and I DDed it for over a year before I started modifications.  I would offer less than that to start.

yes.  blue book is right around $2500 for a base model 85 extra cab.  ask a little lower.  but that is a good price for a running truck like that.  an 85 extra cab is the most desireable truck next to the 85 runner because it has efi and a straight axle.

Rainer

Do you guys think that 265K miles is to much though? I would like it, but all i have is 3000 and I would like to use the rest for a lift and tires, not to make it run.

265k on a yota motor that has been taken care of is nothing.... myself and several friends have run ours over 350K.

Just look at the things mentioned by the others here, that will tell you what you need to know. Basically you jsut want to reassure yourself that the truck was cared for. If so, 265K is not an issue.

All that said, a used truck is a used truck... you never can be certain. I say talk the guy down as low as you can and buy it.

good luck   :turtle:

I bought mine with over 225 k on it for $4000 dollars. Mine is a 93 though. It was also maintained by a Toyota mechanic and driven by a grandma so it was worth it to me.... :dunno:

:yesnod:  My thoughts exactly.  I used to worry about mileage, but on a toyota truck I don't even worry about it anymore.  I bought my 80 4by with about 440,000 miles and it now has 509,000 miles on it.  When I replaced the front axle seal the other day I noticed the wheel bearings were in excellent shape, and were koyo.  Most people wouldn't buy koyo when they could get a couple different brands for much less, so I kinda wonder if they're the originals or not :dunno:

I also found a 85 4runner for sale with 208K miles on a rebuilt engine. For 2750 but he says it is negotiable. Ithink 265k miles is to much so I think I will look into this 4runner instead.
