Broke something wierd need advice
« on: Oct 11, 2006, 01:24:35 PM »
OK.  first a Little story.

I was wheeling a Little last weak. And got stuck in this mud hole. Since I was alone and with no cell signal. I try ed to get loose resulting the truck to sink even deeper and finally not able to move the wheels, so I try to figure whatīs going on and find out that the truck has sunk over the wheals in the rear.  OK so I am panicin all covered with mud so I get in and put the truck to low low and try to squeak it out and find out that it moves 1 inch back and fourth.
After a qouble of times I hear this snapp I stopp and when I release the clutch again I am moving out. wuhú.

Any way I crawled under the truck last weakend and oiled everything and ditnīt see or find anything wrong.

But for the first time I put it in 4wd again today, and everything seams to be working fine  until I put the truck to a full turn on a as fault moving on something like 5 km p/hr, I hear some snaps and the truck shakes with each snap,  again I am under the truck and I donīt see anything wrong....    :dunno:

This doesnīt happen unless I am in a big turn in 4wd  everything else is working fine.  I havenīt got a clue but is there a possibility that I broke something inside the tcase?
Please help.

yeah...mayhap you weren't moving cause a birf was all bound up, then when it went, it freed up ta drivetrain and out you come.

I have a arb lockers up front and rear. the lockers ain't engaged.
I also thought I broke  a birf the minute I heard the snap but this is both directions and it sounds like itīs coming from the t-case I was thinking something in the t-case or the rear drive shaft.?

hmm it could be a birf,  but If I put the hubs in off should I still hear it.  or I would hear it when the hubs are engaged and driving without the 4wd....

hmm maybe not, OK it sounds like a birf, or the locker? itīs fresh assembled

Damn that looks so clear to me now. This has happened once before now I know exactly where I broke my last birf.
But any other suggections why am I so positive itīs in the rear drive line?

The t-case rear output turns in 2wd or 4wd. Didn't you say it only happens when in 4wd while turning? Still sounds like it's a birf to me.

Yes ok I will just have to face it. Itīs a birf.

But here is a twist.  Since the wheeling trip I have notised a leak in the front housing like I have ripped the inner oil seal. First on the left and then on the right side,  I was thinking damn I bent the housing (I was driving kinda fast over rocks rivers and mud   :wink2:)  but since I broke a birf it sounds resonable that I have to change the inner seal. But is it possible to brake the both birfs at the same time?

When the birf bound up it probably caused your front housing to flex and shoved the axle shafts up against the seals.  Probably got them out of round so now they leak.

No he is talking about the headlight fluid in the axle...maybe you forgot to install a transmission.

hi hi hi the jokeīs on me  :cheese: ....
With all those head pondering. Few years ago I wouldnīt had thought about this after  I go wheeling I always take the truck to the garage oil it up and look for cracks or something broken or displaced, I have always just replaced the broken parts without a thought. Lately I have looked at it differently I have found something broke and given it a real good thought why and how I can make it better.

Few years ago I would had torn the front housing replaced the seals and noticed the birf is broken and just simply walked to the spare shelf and picked up a new one "nice new" good used front axle.

I guess I am not as young and stupid anymore,  as I play out to be

A decent truss on the axle would help prevent this type of thing from happening again, and you might want to take some measurements and see if your axle is still straight.
