Isn't it substantially cheaper than regular gas, so the mileage difference evens out?

E85 has always been the same or more around here. I only know of 2 stations here in Tucson where you can even buy it...so, no dollar savings, no mileage saving, inconvenient to procure...doesn't really sound like a recipe for success, but it does sound like the average government promoted scheme.

Back in the 70's and early 80's my dad used to make his own ethanol to run in all the cars.  He stopped making it when the license went from like $20 to over $500 per year.....  He figured buying at the pump was more cost effective in the long run.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

kneedownnate

I'll have to ask my brother what it is he runs.  I seem to remember him saying he's paying either less, or the same for high 90s octane ethanol/gas mix as regular gas.

There are reports of local fishermen having problems with E85 fuel in their tanks.  Ethanol will attract more water to the fuel.  Fishermen are having to drain their tanks when they aren't using their boats!

That's cause people usually aren't smart enough to park their boats with a full tank  :slap:  If they just parked it with a full tank they'd be better off

The gas I'm running isn't E85, but just gas with a 10% ethanol blend.  E85 is 15% denatured ethanol in gas.

Oh how I long for the days of $0.79 a gallon gas again.....& I thought that was ridiculous because I remember my dad filling up for $.25 a gallon when I was a kid. When it hit a buck a gallon I said I'd ride a bicycle before I helped give a multi-million dollar bonus to a oil exec for screwing me & now I find myself happy when I see it under $3.00 a gallon :thud:

All this price gouging & the Europeans saying "We pay even more than that, you're lucky!"....Yes, we pay less than some of the world, but we also are one of the few countries in the world that have oil & oil refineries....how much do they pay per gallon in Kuwait? Saudi Arabia?

I read a news article today where some congresswoman from Michigan wants to stick an additional $0.50 a gallon tax on our gasoline to boot. :usa: If the price goes up to $5 a gallon like they are saying in the financial segments I won't be doing much of this anymore --->  :driving:

If gas were to hit $5 a gallon, you'd not only see a lot fewer people driving, you'd see a lot less people on the lakes, a lot less people flying and the worst of all, you'd see EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT YOU BUY JUMP DRASTICALLY IN PRICE!!  This is the one fact that the greedy oil fatcats seem to forget, they're greed is hurting everybody else!

Uh...nope. Just as B5 is 5% "B" (biodiesel) and B100 is 100% biodiesel, the winter blend gasoline with 10% ethanol could rightly be called E10...E85 is 85% "E" (denatured ethanol). If it was 15% ethanol, all cars could run it with out problems. The higher percentage of alcohol in E85, causes problems with fuel lines, gaskets, O2 sensors, etc. in vehicles NOT designed for it. I think vehicles designed for gasoline can run a gasoline/ethanol blend of up to 30% ethanol with out problems.

Ya know whats funny.
Diesel is a byproduct of gasoline.
And yet its now more expensive.

My family runs a trucking company.
I remember years ago when diesel was sometimes half the price of gas.
Although, trucks burn alot more fuel hauling stuff than cars and pickups, its still nice...
Now that everyone and their brother has a diesel pickup, and bought it thinking, "oooh diesels cheaper" the diesel price has slowly been hiked up...
We have a 1000 gallon tank that we have fueled up usually twice a month..
$4.07 is what were paying a gallon from Dawson Fuel.

Its ridiculous to say the least, that 5 years ago we were paying well under half of what we are now.
The sad part is the future. Theyre calling it a "Recession" but id say its more headed towards a Depression.
Our transfer, 10 wheel dump truck, end-dump, low-bed, and belly dump rates have already gone up several times due to cost of diesel, and the higher cost of parts caused by fuel and economic increases.
Now theoretcally speaking, were not losing money, because our rates go up to counter higher working costs.
For example Our Transfer truck used to be $85 an hour, and its now $100.
But...
The average homeowner that wants a load of decorative rock for his garden, gravel for his driveway, or sand for a sandbox for his kids, is now less likely to purchase a load because of the price increase.

For example a load of gravel with a 2 hour delivery round trip time used to cost around $160 for the trucking and $8/ton (24 tons to a load = $192) for the sand.
Its now $200 for delivery, and around $11/ton (24 tons to a load = $264)

so thats $352
vs.        $464
Over $100 more.

And its only bound to get worse.
If Diesel hits $5 a gallon, and it will..
The rates are gonna go up more to counter the fuel increase.

Quite a vicious cycle..  :shakehead:

Huhwhye

I've been riding the motor-bike more this week, partly due to my 4runner missing a rear diff (because I could drive my 87, but freakin gas is expensive).  I filled my bike up today at $3.59 for 87 octane, that is better than average around here.  Even after the 4runner is fixed, which gets 20mpg,  I'm spending more time on the bike.  Hard to beat that 45mpg on the bike, and I should be getting better, like 50, because the bike needs some work.

I'm looking for a new job right now, and I am reluctant to take a job that requires a long commute.  It has to pay a lot more to be worth it at $4 a gallon.

im payin 4.25 a gallon and climbing due to that ulsd  :pokinit: or whatever into #2.... the main reason to get a diesel was for cheaper fuel and better milage.... well the fuel is expensive and the milage is dropping due to the new #2 there makeing....and it doesnt do much for the lubrication to my injecters... oh well... ill ride my 250 and get 70 mpg..

What I don't get is, the price of propane.  Propane is a byproduct in the production gas.  And it's just as high.

Blame that partially one higher delivery costs due to fuel prices!  Otherwise, it's just another example of greedy businesses taking advantage of the situation.  Come awn, how many people are barely scraping by and need propane for heat, cooking and hot water?  All last winter I used my propane heater, but this year I was filling my 25 gallon tank every 2 or 3 weeks during the cold snap and I finally said flop that!  Started using my little space heater to take the chill off the house.  It isn't enough to make the house comfy, but it takes the bite off and is waaaay cheaper than using propane!!  I'm now at over 3 weeks on 10 gallons and will have to fill it within the next couple days, but that's totally ok with me.

Might have to invest in some good quality sweatshirts!  :gap:  Thats what I did in my apt.  With just me there, My heater was set at 55" and my utility bill was about $35 a month.  When Spotter, my mom, or my sister came up for a few days, my utility bill jumped to about $55 a month.

Now that I am on propane, I'm not looking forward to filling that tank.   I'm going to hold off as much as I can, its just the heater, and the 'pane co. put 40 gal. in it in Feb, and its down to 28 gal.  Hopefully I can hold off until its not cold anymore. :crossed:  Glad my dog is coming up soon, he makes a good space heater :fart:

Oh yea, I just learned to either tuff it out or put on my jacket!  I usually sleep in sweats and a fleece and only have a blanket over me, and it's not unbearable on a really cold night.  Don't get me wrong, if propane were super cheap I'd take full advantage and keep the place around the low to mid 60s, but until then I just gotta keep wrapped up.

When I was single, it was no problem keeping the house at 60*.  I prefer putting on layers than turning up the heat.  Wood stove also helps!
But now that I'm married and the mother in law lives with us, if it's below 80* they will pregnant dog!  :outtahere:  I don't think there has been a day in the last 5 months that the wood stove hasn't been going 24 hours!  And if I have to clean out the chimney all they do is pregnant dog because it's 72* in here, and hurry up and clean it, because it's cold in here!  :screwy:
