VW TDi in '95 4Runner?
« on: Aug 28, 2006, 09:53:02 PM »
ALright, my 3.0 is toast.

And I have a line on a cheap donor car. $1500 for a 98 Jetta.

ANy one have one of these transplants actually driving?

Ive seen several into Samis

I figured with a chip and maybe new injectors, the power would be fine for a  DD & work truck.

I read somewhere that all the accys on the TDi are on the same side and cause problems.

Chip and injectors your at 110-115HP, but mucho efficiency. '98 A3 frame TDi engines make far easier conversions, I hear, than the newer A4 "pendulum mount" engines. Yeah, my TDI is sold to get the 4WD, but not looking back, except where it cost me $9 to go somewhere now it is $27, very literally 3 times mpgs, was expecting that though. :_oops: Acme Adapters in Oregon makes the engine to 22R tranny adapter kit.

You've heard more than I have about the swaps.

I cant find any info anywhere.

I figured with a chip the TDi would be about the same power as the stock 3.0 and about double the MPG.

I have a 74 Bronco that I transplanted a 90 Mustang EFi 5.0 & a 5 speed NV3550 from a TJ.

But the 12 MPG  is rough and the no A/C is tough.
And my Suburban gets 9 MPG in town.

TDI's are awesome engines, they are very rev happy and most horsepower is at the far end of the 900-5100rpm range. With a standard drive by wire throttle control, my new beetle would not stall at idle rpm in first and at incline. I routeinly shifted to third gear from a stop without ever touching the throttle. Torque curve is nice declining tabletop starting at 1900RPM peak, but things can get bent and turbocharger blades cavitate and crash with large throttle input from intense low rpm ft*lbs, so gentle throttle at low RPMS, spin  up rpms for less torque/more HP. TDICLUB.com, look up some of my posts, rrick, I did a killer propane setup that worked very nicely.

I am working on swapping one into my 1st Gen 4Runner right now.  Grab that donor asap at that price.  That is a steal!   And you are right about the accessories, they are all on one side which would be the drives side.  I plan on using all VW accessories.

One thing you would have to do it so convert to a 4cylinder transmission.  The adapter kit is only for that trans.

I'm hoping for 30mpg hwy with 31s and a nice power increase.  I have pics but they are mostly mock up shots, nothing great yet.  With any luck I will make some more progress this weekend.  I am doing a write up with pics that I will probably post up here when I'm done.

Not to hijack this thread - but I was debating the TDi vs 2LT conversion and some people are getitng 28-30+mpg on a 2LT diesel.

See thread here:

Thanks for posting that.. good info.  The VW TDI is very similar in power output to the 2LT stock so it should do about the same.

Is there a "dyno chart" for the 2LT somewhere?
Or for that matter - a 22RE?

The appeal of the 2LTE is that its a bolt up to a 22RE truck.
The TDi looks like a 22RE in terms of redline but lower HP and MORE torque (or at least a FLAT Line)

I don't have a dyno put from the link you posted I found an FAQ page that had another link and another link to the toyota engine specs.  The VW TDI is 90/150.  The euro spec 1.9 TDI made 100HP so they are very evenly matched IMO.  The main thing I like about the VW engine is there is huge support for it, its very easy to mod and easy to find parts for in the US.

Post some pics please!

I will swap to a 5 speed anyway, a slushbox behind a diesel just isnt right.

Im pondering the Lexus V-8 swap, if I did that Id use the auto because it would save  the a boatload of cash. The adapter for the Lex 8 to the toyota 5 speed is megabucks, cause you gotta  buy a custom bellhousing, & flywheel, and a custom computer too I think.
