Gm igntion module conversion
« on: Aug 18, 2006, 04:57:29 PM »
Got a 85 with the 22r that's having some spark issues. When I bought it, it had no spark, and we assumed it was the coil (all engine work, when I say we, it means 2 friends in Kansas, not actually me, in Ohio :hammerhead:). After replacing the coil and ignitor and still no spark, they found that the distributor rotor wasn't turning. More investigation showed that the gear on the crank (or cam, don't remember which he said it was) that runs the distributor was bad, so the lower end was torn down and the gear replaced. Now, the truck would run and drive, but would not idle. It worked for 2 days, and the ignitor/coil burned out again. So, here's my questions, my friends think it has a bad ground somewhere, so they are planning to find/fix that. Does that sound reasonable? Next querstion, does anybody have a good write-up and/or schematic of the GM ignition module/coil conversion so as to no longer need a rediculously expensive and appearantly unreliable Toyota ignitor. I've searched the internet and Pirate the best I could and found only one thread on Pirate that isn't very good. So, could you guys help me with either of these problems?
Josh

for cheaper and easier than the toyota unit, why dont you look into getting an msd or similar? i have saved a writeup from pirate about that, heck, for the gm conversion although i have never heard of it, it still might help you out

since pirate started charging for you to search by buying some star, its pretty much become useless for all the freeloaders liek me on it

I, too, am a freeloader  so I had to do my pirate searches through Google. However, they weren't very successful. Thanks for the info, BTW.

Unfortunately for me, I don't currently have the $250 to drop on an MSD 6-offroad. I'd love to, but I have to worry about getting the thing home more than that right now. From what I've found, I could do the GM conversion for about $30, but I just need more info.

bad grounds are the root of 90% of all vehicle electrical problems, would be something to look into

very possible, the coil  is  a basic coil,  the ignitor is the fancey  little toy part,  it  amplifies the signal going into the coil  so it makes a HOT spark

they need a realy good ground

in 15 years i have replaced 1 on my truck

i have the gm conversion in my 84 and it works great and cost less than 30 bucks it is very easy and simple to wire in you need a coil for a 73 chevy 350 and an ignitoion module for an 85 chevy k-10 350. run your hot wire to the B terminal and from the B terminal to the + on the coil Run your negative to the c terminal and from the c terminal to the - on the coil. then the other two prongs go to the dis. cap and its a 50-50 chance so if it runs bad or is humming its backwards. and with this set up your spark plug gap should be between 40 and 45. any problems ill be watching this post.
