Wireless network problems

OK so heres just about everything, start reading from the bottom of this post because i copied and pasted this off the shoutbox from earlier today:

Today at 05:29:44 pm - MrsWillyMammoth - It doesn't give you a list. You get a calender. Some dates are in bold, those were the restore points. It really works better if you have created one yourself.

What is the deal with norton, is this something you just installed, or is it something that has been on the laptop.

Also, do a full cold boot.  Unplug the laptop, pull the battery, let it sit for a couple minutes, then put battery back in and boot it.  This should clear out everything short of the bios.

Look to see if there are any other instances of aim left on the computer.  Do you have a registry cleaner?  If so, run it.

The weird thing is how long it takes to start up too. I dont get that. Also when i try to turn off the firewall in general it wont even let me get into the windows firewall as I think i said on there.

No it won't hurt anything, it will just clear out all you RAM and such.  How did you get rid of AIM, did you delete by hand of use the uninstall (remove program) feature?

Trust me, it aint gone...you can't get rid of it...you need to get the thing reinstalled.  Do you have the original system software?  Norton leaves its mark on every file in your computer as it scans and watches over things.  It is entirely possible that the system doesn't want to function properly without Norton running.  It is an insidious conspiracy :black helicopters:

When you go to settings/network and internet connections folder, what happens when you click windows firewall?  Other than saying it isn't turned on, are there other tabs you can open, or is the whole deal just shut down?

I dont have any of the disks because this is not my computer. It is my friends computer because he left for the marines today and i already jacked it up. Only disks he left me are ones that are the reboot ones if everything gets totally messed up but i do not want to harm anything that will lose all the programs he has installed

The one that is used for the wireless network. There is only one and its the wireless network card. the thing thats weird is that it doesnt even have the one thats for the 1394 connection or whatever it is thats used for the wired connection. But about the one thats on there.... It is enabled and i press repair and it does everything and it tries to get new network address but it doesnt get the address. i dont get it. It will go forever and it still does not get the address.

look under network adapers, is 1394 listed?

it  also says disconnected and then it usually says acquiring network address

so 1394 isn't listed in the device manager?  It is a different place than the network folder.

if the 1394 is no where to be found try doing one of two things.
through the network connections folder, do setup a new network connection on the left hand side and run thorugh the wizard, or do a find new hardware and see if it will find and recognize the 1394 adapter.

go to the driver tab on top
do "roll back driver"
see if that wakes it back up

Go back and try the setup new network thing, it might just need to be pointed in the right direction.  Wish I was closer to ya, I'd be able to help more.

Have you tried booting to safe mode, shutting down, and then rebooting normally? Sometime that'll clear stuff out.  Also, you could boot to safe mode with networking and see if you can bring the connection up.  Also, go into Regedit and get rid of any and all AOL stuff you find.

OK so im trying to get it to work but it wont. I cant get it so there is just a 1394 Connection, I got a connection that is for the ethernet card thats installed in the computer and everytime i try to make one with a 1394 it wont pop up... How do i get it so there is just a 1394 connection?

While you are in safe mode check and see if you can get into windows firewall.
make sure when you go into safe mode you log in as administrator.

dont you get into safe mode by when you turn it on hit F5?

tap on F8 while it's booting until the option menu comes up.  then select safe mode with networking.

I gotta hit the rack..good luck wit this stuff.  I still recomend running the instal new network connection or doing a find new hardware.  Either that or uninstal the 1394 driver and reload it.

How can i reload the driver without any software?

Windows contains a database of drivers, it will be able to look through its own software to see if there is a suitable driver available.
