Hey Guys
I was wondering if any of you know if there are some after market axles for the IFS.
I have a 1992 runner and want to know if anyone builds stronger axles for when i get my 35s and 5.71 diffs and marlin crawler.
There seems to be ones for the rear 8" but cant find any for ifs saw 1 break on a ute the other week.
IF not any ideas on what metal toyota used?
And whether i should make them out of 4340 hi tensile or use a EN 25 annealed hi tensile?
Thanks Dave

If memory serves me right downy has what you want they use a porsche 930? cv.  I think they also have u-jointed slip shafts to replace the stockers.  Hope this helps you

Hey WT
Ive seen the downey setup and you are right about the slip yoke type axles but they replace the inner CV joint.Which iam am currently looking at getting.
I actually want to replace the actual axle that goes into the diff eg spider gears .The CV bolts onto the axle.
Unless downey have them its hard too find stuff out here in AUS so thanks for any input.

If your worried about breakage I would reconsider running 5.71 in that 8in. The strenght just ins't there. just my 2 cents

Hey 84runner
Why would you not recomend running the 5.71 on the 8" rear?
The 5.71 is the lowest crawl i can get until marlin do a transfer adaptor to suit my case.
i only know 3 people who run the 5.71 here in aus and none have had any problems.
If you have some valuabel experience let me know i haven got the ringies yet LOL.
What about the 5.29 gears would they be any better?
Happy New Year to all you guys
Thanks
Dave

surfindave hows it goin

Well I haven't had first hand experience on my own rig, but I do have a few friends who do.  I run the 5.29's in my runner with 36x12.5R15 and bolth of my friends have switched to 5.29's and they run 35's.  The problem with the 5.71's is that the tooth mesh of the gears insn't as great as with the 5.29's.  You get more tooth contact with the 5.29's and the pinion is bigger, therefore stronger.  And its a butt trying to get those 5.71's in and out of a 8in, housing.  If you can compare the pinion size between the two sets of gears and you will notice a significant size difference between the two.  And then if you intend on putting a crawler in it sometime, all that extra torq will really put it to those gears.  I am running two stock boxes and I have yet to have problems with the 5.29's.  In fact one of my friends didn't even have a crawler box in his when he broke a few pinion teeth of his 5.71's.

Hey 84runner
Thanks for the advice.
I have a auto gearbox and a 2.4 turbo diesel that has about 56kw of power so i was wondering if with the auto it would be better with stress i dont know tho.
I havnt got much crawl with the 4.875 and no marlin case yet but if them gears are going to break then ill go 5.29s do you know anyone with 5.29s running an auto box with a 4cyl? my first gear is a low 2.8 not like a manual at 3.9 have you got any other ideas on how i can get the crawl need more crawl lol.
Thanks again
Dave

The auto box makes up for a lot of gearing issues. Im running an auto with stock case and 4.10 r&p's on 38's no problems at all......um did I mention Ive got a 350 in my truck?  In all reallity having the auto makes your crawl ratio lower than 5 speeds because of converter slippage.

Forgot to ask
Does anyone know of a place i can source the ring and pinnion gears from over there in the US.And have a fax number?
I have seen the prices and they are a quarter the cost of australia.
Also what brand should i go with ive seen genuine gear ,richmond ,precision.
Or are they all the same .
thanks again and sorry for bein a pain in the butt.
Times like this i wish i lived in the US

surfindave  I have no experience with the auto trannys myself but alot of people run 4.56 and 4.88 a turn over 35's. Like White Trash said the auto helps alot that way.

Now for the gears, precision and genuine are the same gears. That is what I run cause the are inexpensive for the most part and they come with a life time  warranty.  The fall back is the machine work on them,  the run out on them for back lash won't be as tight as a set of richmonds.  But I have no problems with mine, but I am also not running a V-8. Another brand is Yukon that people run.

Try 4wheelparts.com  they carry genuine and there prices are negotiable believe it or not.  They work on commision and the have 3 or 4 different prices they can give depending on who you are and how much you buy from them. They also beat prices
