Driveshafts
« on: Jun 28, 2006, 08:51:27 PM »
people have been telling m so many different things for my driveshafts after dual cases.  people keep talking about how my rear angle will be bad, but it doesnt look like it will be, and eveyone says run CVs on the rear shaft.  so i was just wondering for people who have dual cases what kinds of setups you are running.  thanks for helping the newbie out.   :beerchug:

i just shortened my rear shaft for the rear and used the rear most shaft from an '85 x-tra cab as my front shaft (it seems short, but hasn't pulled apart or tried to strip the splines)
i don't have cv's on either shaft and no vibes, but have a mild lift also
since u have an x-tra cab now, once the crawler is in, measure to see if a stock 1 piece rear will fit......not saying it will, just something to check out, then u may be able to cheat in the front like i did.....

CV front, CV rear. The rear prolly wasn't needed, but because I have a 1st gen I needed one in the front for sure.

With the Xtra cab you probably won't need a CV in the rear. I did a square in front using my old CV. I've seen a lot of guys get talked out of using the CV up front and they ended up with bad vibration probs. Depends on your lift.

On my Longbed 81, i have a square CV front shaft and a shortened non cv rear. I took mine to High Angle D-line cause theyre only 15 min from me so it worked out good.

i used the rear shaft from a extendedcab 2 piece, for my rear and just cut off the fixed yoke and welded in a slip spline from a 86 front shaft, works great

You probably have a 2 piece rear shaft because it's an extra cab.  get rid of the 2 piece and have a 1 piece made by a driveline shop.  no need for a cv, the angle won't be bad because of the extra wheelbase.  try to get a little thicker wall tubing though, stock toyota drivelines are pretty thin and like to dent/twist.

I run square tubes front and rear. but I trailer. If your truck is short bed, look into using the front c/v as your new rear driveline. longbeds, and extra cabs don't have a issue. use your old rear as a donor for the front driveline.

thanks for all of the info, and it looks as though for a temporary driving around thing that the stock once piece i have around is literally the exact length i need, so i might use that for a little, and then i think the rear part of my two piece will work in the front for a little, but im going square up front for sure. thanks again everyone :beerchug:

Just a little trick that worked out for me..

I had a 84 Toyota Reg. Cab Long Bed. witch I believe would be the same as your ex cab short bed..

When i put my dual cases in I got a Drive shaft out of a 98 Tacoma Reg. Cab Short Bed (cause it already had a HD CV joint in it.   When I went to do the measurements for it, It went right into place. I did not have to modify it at all. Call some wrecking yards I got mine for $45..  And if for some reason you have to cut it, you will be set up with a nice CV.
93 ExCab with lots of bling..
