rear bed bob with chevy leaves?
« on: Jun 28, 2006, 04:42:08 AM »
I'm trying to get an idea of how much I can bob the rear of my 4runner if I use 63" springs. I want the rear cut off right against where the rear fender starts to bulge. I think I have changed plans again and I'm thinking of going with a 2" body/2" susp. lift and fitting 36-37's with a little trimmin.
I have heard you have to move the rear hanger back some, which will compromise my bob lenght. So I think I will try trimming the bottom of my tailgate about 2" and fab a rear cross member/bumper combo and mounting my rear hangers to it. Does this sound feasable? or am I waisting my time thinking about it.
I was going to go with coils out back but this is my first build to this extent so I think I will keep it simple.

I'm currently building my '88 4runner and I used the chevy springs.  Not sure how everyone else is doing it exactly, but I made a new front hanger and mounted it about 11" in front of the stock hanger. Then I moved my stock rear mount to approx 1/2" off the end of my frame.  I did notice that the distance from the end of my frame to my stock mounts varied by about 1/4" , so I moved my mounts accordingly.  Therefore, my actual overhang on each side is off by 1/4" but my shackles and springs are true. I still have to complete the job by boxing in the end of the frame and providing support for the mounts, which is going to be a crossmember of sorts.  So I'd say the idea of making the mounts part of the bob crossmember may be a good idea.  Also, I haven't driven it yet, so take the info for what it's worth, but I think it'll work out pretty well for me.

Is yours bobbed? It doesn't look like it. The position that yours are in will end up being my bumper.  However I need to chop off that part of my frame so I may have to go with some shorter springs.

Nope, it's full length.  I seem to always need more room to pack more crap.  Heres an overall look at the length of these suckers.

The back of his frame and the shackles must hang out way past the body then. I took 15" out of mine and with 56" springs the shackle is just about flush with the ass end.

There is no way you could run Chevy leaves on a 4Runner with out the frame and springs sticking out passed the body on anything more than around 13" Even with 13" you still have to cut the frame up to the shackle hangers. With chevies that rear hanger needs to be moved rearward.
I decided to go with f-one-fittys. I got a pair from A wrecking yard. They are 53" without any load and they strech to 56" with the weight of a Ford truck on them. They are 4leaf +overload. I plan to start by taking out the overload and bottom leaf and see how it works out. For a 2wd leaf they have some serious arch to them.
