Sway bar on front of 85 4runner.
« on: Jun 14, 2006, 07:26:20 AM »
I just bought an 85 4runner and plan on driving it on the street as well as building it for the trail. My question is can I take the sway bar out and still expect good handling on the street? Also there is a brace that goes from the axle on the driver side to the frame on the driver side, What is this for and can I rip that out as well? Thanks for any help.

I took the sway bar off of my stock 85 truck and plan on taking off the sway bar on my 84 4Runner.  I could never tell the difference with or without.

The brace is the torque rod.  It helps control the truck while hard braking.  If it wasn't there, quickly getting on the brakes hard would send you into the next lane of traffic (I don't remember which way, right or left though  :headscratch:)

The torque rod does limit front end flex and can be removed once you go to a high steer setup like Marlin's

I've heard you can also replace the torque rod with a really stiff shock and get the same performance with out limiting flex.

the shock has to be exactly the same length as the torque rod....or if it wasn't, like mine wasn't, then you can make a stiff bump stop. works the same, actually better than bottoming out the shock.
