PROJECT "COOL HER DOWN"
« on: Jun 09, 2006, 06:49:47 PM »
This Thread is Featured in our Tech from our Forum Members section!

Well im home from school for the weekend, as some of you know i did the con last week....and have driven 2700 miles in the runner in the last two weeks!! :disturbed: thats alot, it only sees about 1000 miles a year till now.. any way-as some of my marlinite freinds know, i have a high horsepower motor with stainless steel headers ect on it...which is good for power but generates alot of heat!! so now project cool her dowm begins!

plans are to reduce underhood temps by 20%

step one-i bought these vents made for a motorhome and will install them in my hood...yes this means cutting a huge hole in the hood, but all in the name efficiancy

step two-if the vents dont cool as much as i want, i will be installing a puller style fan under them to suck hot air out of the engine bay-i dont want to do this but will if i have to

starting point temp is 213 degrees at 10 minute idle in the driveway

i dunno. i like your ideas dan but I think it looks kind of ghetto to me. No offense but I think u could find something a little more trick. It looks like the vent in my living room for the air system. again, no offense man  :beerchug:

im sure it is probably exactly the same as the vent in your living room, and no offence taken thats why i post, to garner opinions, do you have suggestions? i have not cut the holes yet. i do not want a scoop, and i want to keep it as low profile as possible, these are like 3/8th tall...low

How well do you think maybe some heat shields for the headers with ducted air to them would work?  Maybe duct ait from the grill area, not from the fan shroud, and send it over the heat shields and down the firewall.  I'd hate to see you cut some big wholes in that premium paint you put on your 4runner

Nice 4runner by the way

yes, that didnt help at all, and was really expensive.

and thanks uncle jesse, but the idea im working off of is, hot air rises, and in most cases im driving the truck at 2 or 3 mph, so "ram air" or other ducting wouldnt help

You could always do it like those guys with the volkswagen bugs.  Put those risers on the hood to space it up an inch or so to let the heat out.  Just do yours on the rear of the hood.  Something to this effect:

Yeah, I forgot about the lack of ram air.  Some heat sheilds would probably still be a good idea though.

Dan, excellent idea bro  I happening to be wanting the same thing done to my hood as well, I just have not but much thought into yet.

.......So I am VERY interested in your results, and I might have to send you some money in exchange for some of those vents shipped my way (since I have no idea where to buy monoco deisel pusher motor home louvered vent screens )

i tried the riser thing, about 1/2 an inch was all i could get before it looke retarded, and it really didnt seem to do a whole lot, maybe a 3-5% change in temp...not enough

yes, that didnt help at all, and was really expensive.
I put header wrap on a 4-1 header on my MR2 and it didnt do anything. Then I got it ceramic coated, and WOAH, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I believe that Header Wrap works when used futhure downstream on the exhaust system, like right before and the entire length after your cat. There is just too much heat right at the exhaust ports, from my experience wrap didnt do much to cut down the heat there.

All I have done so far to my truck to help with under hood temps is I removed the rubber weather stripping that seals at the Crowl/below the windshield when the hood closes. I hope that the air can now enter the grill and push right straight out through the other end of the hood and then up and over the windshield, or have fresh air be sucked down the firewall from the inside-out, depending on vehicle speed.

Here is a picture of my 4-1 Header from my SC MR2 engine (1.6l 4A-GZE) before I wrapped it. It had some sort of coating before I wrapped it. It wasnt ceramic. And the header wrap didnt do jack. Picture circa October 2001.

Secondly, here is the same header after I got it Ceramic Coated. That coating worked so well you could put your finger half an inch from the pipe and you couldn't even feel the heat. Amazing, definately worth the money. Picture circa November 2002.

Finally, here is a picture of my Downey 4-1 Header on my 3RZ. It came Ceramic Coated, the only way to go

find a donor hood to cop up if it works then paint it if it doesn't then you still have your nice hood to put back on.

I did a search and this is all I found. Mike you have a iron worker at the shop, how deep is the throat? You can get dies to cut louvers.
