hey y'all.

I know that you have been asked this question by quite a few people but I was wondering...

I have an 1987 Toyota pickup 22-R and I was wondering what would be the easiest engine swap for me to do?  I have heard of the 3.0, 3.4, 4.3, 350, 2.7, 454 ( :eyebrow: just kidding) But anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

The eaisest swap for you would be to convert your carburated engine to a fuel injected 22R-E.

All of the parts are available from many wrecking yards, and you don't even need to pull the engine out!

the best  IMO  would be the 3RZ,  but that requires using a w56 tranny me thinks

G- and W-series transmissions both have the same front housing bolt pattern, so if he were to go this route, he can retain his G54 and use the W59 bellhousing from a 5-speed 3RZ setup. Direct bolt-on.

That is what we did with Bevin's 3RZ conversion, we kept his 1985 G54 Transmission.

I was kinda wanting to go towards a v6, i like the four cylinder but i love to have abundant throttle response, and the good sound, of a V6

Yup, thats the only thing I like about V6s, how they sound!

In my opinion, it is cool to stay all-Toyota, so I would recommend getting a 1995+ 3.4l V6 and using the V6 R150F bellhousing to a 22R-TE Turbo 5-speed transmission, the R151F transmission, which uses the same transfercase style as yours, just a 23-spline version.

The Turbo R-transmission has a lower first gear than the V6 R-trans (4.31 vs 3.83) and it features a tail housing designed for the Gear Driven Transfercase, just like the one you've got. The output on the R-transmission has a a 23-spline coupler, so the transfercase that you use must have a 23-spline input, which is larger and stronger than your factory 21-spline transfercase setup.

3.4 would be an excellent upgrade for sure

does anyone have a writeup on a 3.4L swap?  How hard would this be?

A 3.4 swap wouldn't be any harder or easier than any other.  Big Mike laid out a pretty good game plan as far as that goes.
Here are some kits from ORS to check out: http://www.offroadsolutions.com/products/engine_upgrades.htm

When my 3.0 goes to the afterlife, I'm gonna swap one in.  I got to drive my friend's T-100 with a 3.4 yesterday and I think I'm in love.

I'd either go with a 2.7 or a 3.4  In your case, you may as well go with the 2.7, as I think over all it'd be easier to do, because you can use more parts that you have now.

I beleive the 2.7 actually, has more horsepower and torque than the 3.0 (Mike, help me on this? ) and if you're going to do all the work of doing the swap, I think you'd be disappointed with the results :twocents:

Nope, almost but not quite. They are rated at exactly the same HP, but the 3.0 has 3 more ft-lbs of torque.

From my experience, however, after driving numerous 3.0 powered and 2.7 powered Crawlers, the 2.7 should be rated at +25 HP over the 3.0. The 2.7 is more of a "Get-up-and-get-out-of-the-way" motor while the 3.0 is more of a "I-am-tired-why-was-I-built-someone-just-kill-me" motor

I've only driven a few 2.7L tacos and I'll be honest I was impressed. If somehow I can get ahold of a later 22RE truck I'd love to drop in a 3rz.

i love the 3.4l V6 and you should too! lol, i would recomend it, possibly find a junkd  95+ taco with it that got rear ended? just make sure there's no drivetrain damage, idk if this is possible but it seems like getting rear ended could put alot of stress on the tcase/tranny/engine,  but if you could find one with a good drivetrain you would have all the parts you need wiring harness, the whole works.
