Swapping to an w-56
« on: May 26, 2006, 04:24:21 AM »
I have an 83 pick-up that I bought with a broken L52. I was told over on pirate that swapping to a w-56 would be a good thing. I bought an 89 4-runner the other night. I pulled the tranny out of the 4-runner and everything looked good, however I got on here and started reading about swapping certain parts and crap to make it fit. I had planned on swapping the front d-shaft and shortening the back one about 2 inches.

The turbo trucks acctually had a stronger tranny than the N/A 22RE. It's a RF151 which is a much stronger animal than the W56

your going to have to move the tcase cross member and shorten the rear drive shaft and lengthen the front,  marlins L52HD  is a l52  with a G54 gear set,  Much stronger than stock  and bolts into place with no mods necessary

this is what i will be running next year  i hope

the R151  is THE strongest tranny  it came in 86,87  behinde the turbo 22Rte

then the v6 R150
then the W56,  then the G54

but just so you know Marlin himself ran a L52HD  in his own truck till last fall

So I guess this means I will be cutting the floor up too. Any ways I have come up with a x-member and I might drop the tranny soon

yep it's possible to swap.I've done this before. You will have to shorten the rear d-shaft.The front shaft from the w56 will work with out shortning, but you'll have to use the 83 axle yoke or re-drill the pinion flange. You'll have to cut the floor hole a little bigger to accomadate the shifter, unless it's a forward shift t-case then you may not have to.A cheaper way to make the crossmember work with out totally redoing the frame mounts is to turn the crossmember around backwards, two of the holes on each side will line up,get a piece of 1/4 plate, drill holes accordingly. Then just bolt it up and weld the plates to the frame.

Someone,Im not sure who it was, makes a ubolt kit for the crossmember. You just put the ubolts over the frame and  crossmember :dunno:

Have both the trannys on the ground to compare them. I decided to swap the bearings on the clutch fork and I was able to swap the slip joint ends of the drive shafts so that I dont have to drill new holes in the pinion flange. I still have to finalize my cross member and cut a hole in the floor for the shifters.

just get some stock ubolts,  i used my old stock ubolts and they work great  for fitting over the frame to hold the crossmember

Just finished it up, and took it for a test drive in FWD because no one was open today to shorten the rear shaft. The tranny seems to make alot of noise shifting and crap, the normal noise but noticably louder. I am hoping that fresh fluid will solve that. Does anyone know off hand where the fill is?

I'm guessing it's about half way up on the driver side of the tranny.

Thanks, I havent decided what to do with the L52, I think I am gonna haul it to a tranny shop and get a evaluation and a quote on rebuilding it and go from there.
