high pinon options for 85 runner
« on: Dec 15, 2003, 08:58:56 PM »
I have a 1985 4 runner on 35's and a 4" lift. I want to look into changing over to a high pinon diff. I go out on the rocks but dont really compete or push it too hard. It should only need to be as strong as stock or a little stronger. I dont need it to be indestructible or made of unobtanium or anything. Will I have to change out the axles and everything? Any ideas?  :driving:

So I dont have to change axle shafts or anything else? Just the third member? That would be an easy swap then.  What about my lock-rite and 5.29's? Can I keep those or do I have to buy new?

As far as I know you can not keep any of your old stuff.  The high pinion used reverse cut gears and a v6 type carrier. So none of your current setup will work, unless you have a v6 lockright then you have a chance.

Yep, Hi pinion will bolt right in using your shafts. As WT said the internal parts of the third member are different so they will need to be new. Marlin sells complete third members. They are listed on the web site. All Pro also sells them and so does Randy's Ring and Pinoin. But of course Marlin is the man.
