New? skid plate
« on: Apr 12, 2006, 08:22:56 PM »
While wheeling at Hollister Hills this weekend..I met a group from San Jose
They showed me the skid plates they were using ....something new to me......
its the same material you use in a kitchen for a cutting board ....... that white plastic stuff. They made most of there plates with 1/4 to 1/2" stock.
I was told the plastic doesn't break & has little to no weight.
anyone out there know where to buy this stuff & what is the correct name.
One of the rock buggies was telling me that he mostly used 1/4" stock

Thats interesting

I have a feeling I know what you're talking about, but I've never heard it used in that application

its a bit more resilient than kitchen cutting boards  :hammer: but it is commonly used as fire engine water tanks now, due to its durability, and lack of weight.  That is what is what I woudl guess they are using .  I don't know what it is called, but that may give you something else to search for.  You can actually weld it too, they've got plastic welding rod for it and everything

I saw that in some magazine.  I dont know which but it was on a Lexis(or some other high end SUV) that was tricked out to wheel.

The plastic is called UHMW Polyethylene.

You can get it from several places.  Just google the name.

One place that will sell small quantities of plastics is Cadillac Plastics.  Just call 800 information for their number.

A lot of the newer buggies are using that stuff as skid plates too.  Seems to work pretty good.

Yup, cutting board material.
You can get it at Tap Plastics, but watch the pricing.
