Gas tank capacity 22RE non-SR5 1986 4runner
« on: Apr 07, 2006, 04:58:06 PM »
Hey guys-

Couldn't find an answer when I searched.  I recently purchased an 86 non-SR5 runner.  I also own a SR5 86 ext. cab.  On the ext. cab my capacity is about 17 gal.  On the 4runner I recently was on empty for awhile and put in about 14 gal.  I'm trying to figure out if I have a gas light with the SR5 guages I swapped into the runner.  Are all of the rigs 17 gal. and I was way off from running dry, or could my runner be a 14 or 15 gal. and the light doesn't work?  Any ideas?

I think the 2 sizes were 14 and 17. I could be mistaken though.

You could do what I did and keep a small gas can in the truck and then run it until it dies. Put in 1 gallon or so of gas and then go fill it up.

I called a couple different toyota dealerships.  The options for 1986 were 56 or 65 liters.  Which is about 14 or 17.  Still don't know if mine is the 14 and my guage is good but with no low fuel light, or if my tank is 17 and with switching to sr5 guages it is not reading right.

Another thought.  I have a junker 87 parts truck on my uncles property.  I wonder what it would take to get that gas tank up to snuff.  I think it would be either 17 or 19.  Is that too much of a gamble to use an old tank like that?  How could I know if it was good?

pull the drain plug, see what comes out.  I'd just flush it out and run it.
