Transfer Case Shifter installed backwards.
1. unbolt shifter
2. turn shifter 180 degrees
3. remount shifter

My 84 did it, a friends 85 does it.  Far as I can tell, it's the shifter seat in the tranny letting the stick move too far. :dunno:

yep,  if its a  alum housing its a forward shift, most likely

call marlin and get a shifter socket and seat,  thats why its so sloppy

you can get them from your local dealer,  but Marlins are made from a stronger plastic resin  and will last longer

If you have 1985 drivetrain then it is a W56 transmission with a RF1A top shifting transfer case.

Goat, go pull your boot  and see if the tcase shifts from the top of the tcase or if theres a little metal plate there and the shifter goes in the tranny

i'll bet its a forward shift
