I finally got all sick of dragging what used to be a pristine showroom condition bed all over the rocks and decided to go for a flatbed.  I couldn't stand to look at my truck all bashed up like it was, and figured that some tubing would take the abuse without getting so deformed.

Here's what I started with:
'84 Hilux, locked, dual-cased, winched, EFI converted, 37" tired, half-doored (in the summer...)
'87 Supra, 400 HP.  smooth as glass at 130 'cause my tires are NEW!...
'92 F250 Diesel, tow rig, ATS Turbo, leveling kit, killer stereo

reklund5

So I borrowed a bender and bolted the stand to the floor.  I went and saw my buddy at the steel supply place and got 6 sticks of 1.75" .120" wall CREW tubing.  Ignore my messy garage and the quarterpanel of the Supra in this picture...

I ditched the bed at a buddys place when he wasn't looking and decided to get to work.  I removed the old bumper and sliders I'd made years ago, and will replace those with new ones that better match the flatbed.  I'll use a set of Marlin's sliders and end up making my own rear bumper/crossmember part.

Heres another shot, just to see what I'm working with...

Here's one more shot...you can also see the new alloy wheels on my F250 in the background... :disturbed:

I fired up the plasma cutter and the grinder and removed the old bed mounts from the frame, so I'd have a smooth surface to work with.  They actually came off pretty easily, and the frame smoothed up nicely with a flapper disc on the grinder.

So it seems that I'm way better at demolition than new construction...  I've got my bends laid out on the garage floor as per the Tube Bending 101 instructions from Pirate...but thats it.  I ran out of time to actually bend any tubing this past weekend.  I probably won't get another chance to bend anything until Sunday... but I'll post more pics as they become available.

looks about like mine does right now Ryan   :suprised:

I picked up some square tubing today for the support bars for the deckplate.  If it's not freezing this weekend, I'll hopefully get some actual work done!

Holy Cow!  PROGRESS!

I was getting really frustrated with the weather around here lately.  It snowed on my days off the past 2 weeks.   :maddest:
And, to top that off, I've been sick   with a sinus infection, which has spread into my eyes in the form of bacterial conjunctivitis    So I can't see anything and my eyes feel like they're full of sand.

I got a phone call from a friend, volunteering not only the use of his shop, but his assistance as well.  I drugged myself up and loaded up the truck and my tubing.  I drove over to his shop yesterday, and heres what we got done in about 5 hours.  These are crappy camera phone pics, as I was too medicated to remember my camera  :smack:

I like flatbeds. hehehe. What are you using for bed material? You should use diamond plate. It looks sharp as hell.  :yesnod:

I like your truck a lot. Clean as hell. The tube looks good so far, and diamond plate would look great.

I'm planning on diamond plate for sure...It seems like the most obvious choice for this application.  I also have some cool 62 LED taillights I'm going to use.

Probably won't have much time for progress until the weekend, and even then it will just be working on the rear crossmember/bumper.  My truck is at a friends shop, and we won't be able to work on it again until the 2nd at the earliest.

I got to spend another afternoon at my friend's shop today, working on the truck.  In 5 hours we got the 2 "fender" bars bent and installed, as well as a diagonal support behind the cab.

Notching the fender bars is the devil.  (Kathy Bates in "The Waterboy")  Dey're de debbil, Bobby!  Fender Bars are for de debbil!

It took me 4 hours just to bend and notch those two bars, gradually grinding the notches in place until they fit just right.  They're on a compound angle, so the hole-saw notcher wouldn't work.  I notched the tubing with an angle grinder...definitely NOT the most fun I've had in the shop...

The diagonal support actually sits on the inside corner of the frame, so it should be plenty strong.  I'm only going with one support, since the fuel tank is right in the way of a second bar.  If/when I install a fuel cell, then I can add the second bar pretty easily.

More progress next weekend hopefully...

I spent $400 on 6 20' sticks of 1.75"dia .120" wall HREW TUBING.  So far, I've only used 3 sticks, so I should have plenty left over for a front bumper...

Thanks Nate...

The tires are GREAT on the Supra....I should drive it more often!  The damn thing just sits in the garage...

I was all excitd to come home tonight and do some finish welding on the truck.  I got the welder out, the extension cord out, and my new auto-darkening mask out.  I laid down like 2" of weld, and the damn welder RAN OUT OF WIRE!!!   :maddest:

I guess I burned thru the spool of wire on all my buddies projects...so nothing gets done until I get some more wire tomorrow.
