36'S VS DRIVETRAIN--YOUR OPINION/EXPERIENCE

I'm getting new tires in a couple weeks for mine, will either be 33x12.50x15 tsl's or 36x12.50x15 tsl's.  There's only about an inch difference in height at the pumpkin, but more weight/leverage, etc.
I have a marlin crawler (2.28*2 only), 5.29's and 27 spline longfields w/fr and rr lockers, stock 22re and tranny.  Most trails around here are ruts/hills/mud, very little rock and what little rock we have is usually greasy.  When the trails are dry, they do give enough traction to break stuff when stupid.
I have broken 2 stock birfields w/33" mtr's, which rarely give very much traction around here (I cuss them at least once each trailride).  Also note that the birfields were broken before I added the marlin crawler.
What's your opinion--think it'll hold up to 36's, or should I just stick w/33's to lessen the breakage and have an inch less clearance under the diffs?

IronClad

ive seen  toyota axles stand up to 42" tsls and 40" boggers...  run them.. but check your steering stops  thats one of the main killer of a birf

at least 36's.  Been very happy with 37" mtrs, locker/welded, longs, and dual cases with 4.7 gear set.  Only mechanical carnage was a weak tranny that was already on it's way out

I don't see anything that will change breakage on yours going from 33's to 36's.

Time to go wheelin!

Hyena

Run them.  Remember to check the steering stops and the steering arms regularly, but that should be done anyway.

whiteman

Run them 36's, you should be fine,  I will be running 35" Boggers, aka (Axle Breakers), and I have a rev limiter for a reason...

yotee

definatly the 36's if not bigger. the 27 spline longs are the chromo set? if so just go with whatever YOU WANT. the 27's and 30's will hold up to more than you think. i have abused my 30's and can't break 'em.

dont mean to hijack the thread but i am gona be running the same stuff as this guy a know 5.29's 27 spline longfields aussie locked f/r with 36 tsl's what i want to know is will a stock 22re be able to cruise at 70 easly?

I was running a tired stock 22r for a long time with 5:29s and 37" mtrs and it wasn't bad at all as long as you weren't going up hill or against the wind.  other than that I could cruise 70-75 all day.  Now I have a new motor about ready to start with the engnbldr 143 hp kit with efi conversion on top of that so I don't think i'll have anymore problems.  and definitly go with the 36" tsls if not the 38's you wont break those birfs those are what i have and beat the piss out of em

UGLYTOY

thanx for the replies--i didn't figure it would break too much w/a stock engine, but wanted some other opinions before i bought tires

furrballs95

how long do you guys think that stock birfs will last with 36" swamper SX's cause i def dont have the money right now to buy some better birfs, cause its all going for the SAS kit :smack:

Hyena

I have tried breaking my 30 splines with my 37's and welded front end, no such luck yet.  the 27 spline birfs are susppose to be the same strength.  it just just the 30 spline inner axle is stronger then the 27 spline.  but you shouldn't have problems with 36's.

88wildrunner

depends on how you wheel it, its fine on the street but if you start beetin it hard offroad they'll break, jus carry some spares till you can get the better birgs.

go 36's+  I run 37's on profields (not really any stronger that stock) and I haven't had a problem.  I'm running the same duals 2.28x2 with 5.29 and f/r lockers.  Love my tires wouldn't ever go smaller now.  I'm not sure what in the drivetrain will have a problem with those tires except for the birfs and you already said you have longs, so go for it

FatAzzRunner

Run the 36's.  I started out with 36" TSL bias plys and I didnt like the tires too much as far as chunking where we wheel but they hooked up and I since then have gone to 37" MTR's and I love em.

I beat on my rig fairly hard and have not broke a Long yet.  I have broken a 5.29 R&P though, but it had 2.5 HARD years on it.

GOod luck, post up your pics when you decide.

you can run anysize tire you want on the stock birf as long as you don't have  a front locker.  When you put one of them in there you shouldn't run anything over a 33 i'd say

whiteman

BBW,  We must wheel alike because I would have to agree, with a led foot they will go fast.

Unless you have Bobby Longs  :eyebrow:

yotaboy79

hell im running 36 tsl sx's duals 2.28x2 5.29s welded front and rear on stock birfs and innards and amazingly there still holding up i know that as soon as i get them in a bind they will pop but as long as you drive smart they will hold i do plan on upgrading to 30 spline longs in the future just dont have to coin right now

furrballs95

my buddy just snaped a stock one today he has 33" firestone mt's and a welded 4.10 v6 third so i'm not to shure how a welded on is going to hold up with 36"

 :suprised:   Oooooohhhhh!

I am going to run a welded rear and a locked front with 35x14.50 boggers, I will tell you how it goes :yesnod:
