1st generation toyotas look like this.  Roughly 1979-1983 model years

2nd gen 84-88

3rd generation 89-94? or 95, I don't remember

the big differences are visible in the pictures.  (no the third gens didn't come with a dirtbike :hahaha: )  other than that, the 1st gens had solid axles, and a 20r or 22r (carburated 4 bangers)  the 22re (FI 4 banger) came out in 85, and 85 was also the last year of the SA.  The 3.0 (v6, had some issues, can be a good or crappy motor)  came out in the pickups in 89.  the 22re was also still a choice in the 3rd generation as well.  This doesn't cover four runners, but I hope this helps

Now to confuse you a little the 1st. gen 4Runner looks like the 2nd. gen truck since there was not a 1st. gen 4Runner during the 1st. gen 4x4 truck and the 1st gen 4x2 truck was before the 1st. gen 4x4.

And to top it all off. The last year of the 1st generation Runner doesn't look like the 1st year of the 3rd gen trucks, even though there the same model year! Those rascals!

The 3.0 (v6, had some issues, can be a good or crappy motor)  came out in the pickups in 89.

it came out in 88, the 88 3vz didn't have the same headgasket issue, the recall was only applicable to 89+ model
88 4runner v6,
5.29 with 35" tires,
Isuzu Rodeo rear disk brake,
t-case hand brake in near futur
solid axle'd

it came out in 88 for the pickups?? I didn't know that.  I knew it came out in 87 or 88 for the 4 runners, but I thought it came out in the pickups in 89, with the change to the 3rd gen body style

I thought it came out in 88 after the turbo.

I just checked ORC, in the engine history section and it said...

"The 3VZ-E V-6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2959 cc, 180.5 CI
150 hp @ 4800 rpm
180 lb-ft torque @ 3400 rpm
9.0:1 compression ratio
Bore/stroke 87.5 x 82.0
This motor was first used in 1988 4Runners. I get a lot of complaints about the head gaskets on early V6s. Toyota has recently extended the warrantee on 88-94 V6s, check out the Common Questions page for details.

the second gen 4 runner started in 89 and went until 95

here is more confusion, there is a 4runner like conversion vehicle put out by winnebago the motorhome company and were essentially a converted 81 pickup that appears to look like the later 4runner..... muahahaha

this page helps define a lot about it http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/

So then it would not be mistaken for a 4Runner in the 1st place, so what's your point?

i added it in there, because for someone who has no idea about it, they could easily think it was a 4runner

Negative capn, 2nd gen runners started in 90, the first gen body style carried over a year longer than the trucks!
