Motor rebuild

I have an 84 Toy with a 22-R/Propane, it's getting a little weak and is losing some oil and I was thinking about having it rebuilt with a little more power. What would be the best things to do, cam, heads, etc? Also, what do you think it would cost to have it done? I'm a college student and I'm on a budget, but do have a little bit of a stash built up to spend on it, so no LCEngineering motors, even though I've thought about it and it is tempting.

 I just put propane on my 22R and love it! with propane you can up the compression quite a bit to get what your looking for. Have you talked to Cary at http://gotpropane.com/. that would be your best bet.

the thing that really holds the 22r back is the head design. getting flow out of a SOHC is difficult but doable, big valves, big ports anything the make the "big air pump" work better is good for power and efficency.

This is exactly why people make hybrids!  The 20r head flows much better than the 22r head, hence unleashing more potential.

let me correct that -- it doesn't flow more, it just flows "better".  the swirl ledge on the 22R ports actually helps with low end torque and efficiency but is one of the limiting factors in the design.

for low end power, i'd much prefer a stock 22R over my hybrid...but in freeway driving, it makes all the difference in the world!

Kane  how is your propane injected,  is it a carb like thing,  if so you can adapt it to fit a 20R intake,   you could buy a 20R  cheap  and steal everything from that 20 but the block,  have your block bored maybe .020  and use aisin /stock type pistons with moly or plasma rings,  20R head and intake and timing kit,  and cover  on the 22R block,  this way you'll have the best of both worlds,   big bore 22 block with the high flowing 20R head and double row 20R timing chain

i dont think the make as much noise cause the dont wear near as fast

easy way to do the propane setup would be to buy an LC engineering 22R carb adapter for the 20R intake, then find a junkyard 22R carb and steal the throttle plate off of it
