Exide Select Orbital Battery anyone?
« on: Jan 24, 2006, 05:26:13 PM »
So i went to Kragen today (only thing close to me) because i wanted to buy and Optima.  They don't sell optima's but they said they had a battery that competes with the optima.  It is called the Exide Select Orbital.   anyone heard of this battery?  I bought it to try it out.  My last battery is about 2 1/2 years old and won't hold a charge for over a week.  It was like $134 before core charge, $8 for core charge, $5 mail in rebate, so it was like $121.  Same thing that is in the picture but mine is only has 2 top terminals and 2 side terminals.  My battery i have right now is smaller then this new battery so i need to make a new battery tray before i can install this battery.

Exide Battery: Orbital; Dual Terminal; L:9" W:7" H:8"
Orbital Battery: Group 75dt, 690 Cca, 850 Ca, 80 Minutes Reserve; Best Fit Estimate, Check Polarity And Clearance Before Installing; Battery May Be Vented Outside Of Vehicle
Warranty: 84 Month Limited Warranty

IMO, being as I have sold them,(and warranted them)  they are not a bad battery, if it doesn't see hard use.  Due to the way the posts are set up, the plate connectors that run to them are very long, and seem to destroy themselves after hard use.  I have used Optima's 800U battery(top and side posts) for the last 5 years.  I have gone through 2, but only because the first one fell into my A/C clutch and ate about 1/2 of one of the cells.I ran it for about a week like that, then swapped in a new one. NAPA's batteries are made by Exide as well, just to our own specs.   Go with the Optima and forget it.

It was like $134 before core charge, $8 for core charge, $5 mail in rebate, so it was like $121.

you do know, if you give them your old battery, you don't have to pay the 8 bucks, right? :headscratch:

NO!!!  NO NO NO NO NO!!!.  We use these at work and they drop like flies!  I would say we have about 15-20% of them last less than a year, and it's a rarity to get more than 2 years out of them.  I don't know a lot, but I do know that these batteries are utter turds man!

the exide orbitals suck... my truck currently runs one... i had a yellow optima before, and it was much better..... hte orbital is ok, but they are notorius for losing a cell...... ask alyssa2004, she knows about them

The idea isnt to be able to return a battery with no questions, it's to not have to return the battery (s) in the first place.  :qtip:  ;)

When the company was smart enough to buy optimas, we got way more use out of them than the orbitals.  And I guess I should ad that we use the napa ones too.

Exactly!  Kinda like how when somebody says they buy kragen starters cause you can just keep returning them when they go bad.  I don't wanna hafta keep returning junk, I wanna put something on my truck and forget about it.

Some gels like a trickle and some like a fast surface charge.

having had an optima yellow and the orbital, the optima was way better.......  both batteries were pretty much removed from my truck and sat for about a year each, after returning them back to service the optima was fine..... the orbital worked for a week...... i got the orbital replaced as it was still under warranty, and it wasnt an incovienence as i worked @ wheel works, which out here, is the same building as kragens...... the orbital i have in my truck right now hasnt given me any problems, i jsut still dont trust it as much as i did my optima

Just FYI, Optima Batteries are not gel cells.  They are a spiral cell battery.  they basically take a lead plate, sandwich a special separator and another plate on it, and roll it to the likeness of a beer can.  Thats what gives it the "six-pack" look.

youre correct, and neither are gel cells.

unless you're winching, or welding, it is unnecessary. I will guarantee that 600CCA will start any vehicle(I mean passenger vehicles and light trucks, not Kenwoths and/or a D-9) What you need to remember is that CCA are what the battery will/should have at 0* Fahrenheit, so unless you live where the temp is really low, they aren't that important of a rating.

So what necessitates being considered a gel then?  Would the optimas and the like be considered a dry?  It's funny cause our battery reps have all called them gels, so maybe they're all horribly mis-informed.

Been running the Exide for a couple years no troubles.  No winch or extra light though.

I ran the Exide in my Jeep for like 6 years with a winch and lights and never had a problem, infact it just sold with the Jeep and still works like a champ.
