22r installing timing chain guides.
« on: Jan 24, 2006, 12:12:58 AM »
im look at the set from D.O.A. racing for $80. Do i have to remove all the same parts to replace these as to replace the timing belt.
Im in college at fresno state and the ticking just started. im limited on time and tools. i can take the head and maby a few other things off but thats about it.
or should i just drop the $275 on the complete timing set and pay someone to do it. anyone know of any good mechanics in fresno. or if ya have some free time and the tools ill pay cash. Sorry so repetative (brain worn out) thanks for any input.

its very easy to do yourself, and the head doesnt need to come off.... i recently replaced mine.... i got the www.lcengineering.com steel guides because they are a bigger company than doa and have a better reputation. i also got the standard timing chain kit from www.engnbldr.com in total, i spent about $200 on everything, but i made sure it was built to my specifications. i did all the work by myself and it was pretty easy, i even replaced my oil pan gasket as well..... start to finish of solid working is about a day, and thats how long it took me, but if you are really gungho on it, it shouldnt take that long..... let me link you to a couple of threads on otehr sites about it..... one is yotatech that i started, but i got banned there, so i cant respond there.... and the other is from roger brown, he is a well respected member of the toyota community

make sure you have the right tools....

chain vise grip (for the pulley bolt)
pulley puller or steering wheel puller (same thing)
breaker bar
seals...the ones in the tube
coolant
oil and oil filter
10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 19mm sockets

it took me 2 days because i ran around looking for the right tools and marking every piece.

i just finished my dual row conversion, and its simple. 15 hours with confusion putting the sucker back together(pop's excited and forgot to put bolts in the right places, its not fun trying to sort through all the bolts to find the right ones.  :hammerhead:

for that b*std pulley bolt that holds the pulley on the crank, i used an impact wrench instead of having to do it early i got the engine mostly cleared before i got to it.

you dont need to take the head gasket off, i didnt, and have no leaks.... you use a dab of silicone on the gasket when you real it..... dont worry, removing the timing chain cover will not hurt your headgasket or cause it to fail....
